If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

  • Apr 3 2013: Poverty, hunger, tribal wars, children soldiers, and the killing of gorillas and elephants. And a beautiful view, lots of flowers, good soil, lost opportunities.

Apr 4 2013: Hey Simone,Thanks for sharing your thoughts.....Yes all the negatives you have mentioned currently exist in Africa, however, Africa is largely ipopulated with beautiful loving people....beautiful scenery....great and love flowers....and the soil is great in major parts....
As for the lost opportunites..I would personally think it is "untapped opportunities".....Africans have many positives, capabilities and resources that they don't yet recognize.

Has the media influenced you in any way when it comes to the negative thoughts?
      • Apr 4 2013: Hi Mary,

Well, I often read all types of news from all over the world, so it is difficult to say I was not influenced by the media. Somehow, I compare the "untapped" possibilities with what I heard about Brazil, a country with a "high potential". I would prefer to see the "potential" materialise as more honest behaviour, less clientelism, more sharing with the population, more schools created, etc.

I have to say that I have seen beautiful photos of Africa too, like nice people, lakes, deserts, volcanoes, animals,... But I would be discouraged to visit, as I would not feel safe...

          Apr 5 2013: Hi Simone,
Yes, Africa has so much untapped potential and with the new age...we will be privileged to witness the transformation step by step.
Thanks for stating how you feel. You are not alone, many people share the same feeling with you. Generally Africa is associated with negatives such as civil war and strife, dangerous place to be, diseases and such. It is human to keep away from what can negatively affect us. What the majority of people don't know is that Africa is like any other continent with both bad and good. Africa good is more than bad, but the media concentrate more on the bad...also the effects are exaggarated.
Truth is the only thing that can wipe away your fear for safety and by then you could buy a ticket and off you witness the beautiful photos and sceneries.....
          Love, Mary
