If you have NEVER been to Africa, when someone mentions "Africa" or you hear "Africa", what is the FIRST thing that comes into your mind?

People associate different regions/continent based on media, informational material, myths, stereotypes and such. The main idea of this discussion is to find out what people who never had "first hand experience" think about the continent. Thanks for your contribution.

Mar 23 2013: "The Dark Continent"

As a small child I associated Africa with Tarzan.
Lots of jungles and lots and lots of animals wondering freely around.

Having grown up and having friends from Nigeria and having read books by South African authors and listened to wonderful TED talks from different countries in Africa I now see it as another place where humans like me live and suffer and laugh and cry, and struggle with the same issues we all do.

      Mar 23 2013: Hey Mary,
Wooah, I know the movie Tarzan....very interesting and exotic.
Yes I agree with you, Africa is like another country.....
It is a contrast that it is called "The Dark Continent", while most of the times it is sunny and bright.....
I remember my grandma telling me Nairobi the capital of Kenya used to be called "City in the Sun"
