What can replace the rat in medical experiments?

Since many years, its remarkable achievement and spectacular result are unforgettable. i think its a easiest and cost effective animal that can be still used as an experimental piece... what do u think about it??

    Mar 11 2013: One possible alternative might at some point be using specific cells or organs (human) lab-grown for the purpose of experimentation in conjunction with virtual bodies… ultimately a fully functional animal ( human or otherwise) would need to be in the testing pipeline
