Government subsidies hurt the environment

Humans are an extremely creative and adaptive species, especially when when a product or resource is in short supply. For this reason, I find it baffling that some governments subsidize resources such as water and gasoline. Lowering the prices of these things creates an artificial sense of security in the supply, stiffing innovation, and even promoting waste. By allowing these resources to sell at their natural price governments could reduce their budgets, promote conservation, and foster innovation.

Feb 11 2013: welcome to the desert of the real. only by government logic, it is okay to put extra tax on cars, and subsidize gasoline production. only by government logic it is reasonable to subsidize tobacco farmers and penalize smokers.
