What should the new public education system look like in regards to assessment?

I spent most of last night and this morning reading the TED Conversations under the keyword "high school". The idea of changing this outdated system has been around, perhaps as far back as the early 1900s when the Montessori system was first established AND rejected by the american education system.

Currently, there is a wave of protest against standardized testing. If we eliminate/diminish the presence of standardized testing, how will we assess our students?

Portfolios? Open ended exams with no right/wrong answer? How will we gauge our educators and students in the classroom to make sure our future is prepared for this fast-paced century?

I am working towards becoming a full-time high school math teacher this Fall and am eager to be a part of this paradigm shift in education. It has been put off far too long.

I look forward to hearing your ideas!
