If India and Pakistan have a falling out and move toward nuclear war, what would the US response be?

Would they side with India despite being allied with Pakistan for a longer time? Would they side with Pakistan despite the current strained diplomatic relationship? Would they even take a side? Would they try and broker a peace?

    Jan 9 2013: The States will sit back and crunch on the popcorn, China has troops in the LOC region making India nervous, if The Dragon withdraws and sits quietly then the two might get back to amiable relations or it won't.

    Jan 9 2013: Okay Krisztian bery good point I meant a military invasion by another country. I believe several recent developments have made nuclear weapons more desirable, but I hope I don't have to eat my hat again. Thanks

    Jan 7 2013: A nuclear exchange on the Indian subcontinet would be a disaster for everyone. Hopefully, we are smart enough to stay out of the way. These are nuclear weapons remember. No country with nukes has ever been attacked. Iran knows this too. Make a mistake, and even a major prime minister or American President could end up in front of an International Tribunal.

    Jan 7 2013: I suspect it will be the same response as last time.

    The corporations based in the USA told people in both countries that they had better settle matters quickly or the corporations would have to pull all of their people out of there. The economic effects would be disastrous to both Pakistan and India.

    Humans are a strange species. International issues seem irreconcilable, even under the threat of nuclear war. Then an immediate threat to your monetary income somehow makes all the issues negotiable.

    War is becoming obsolete.

    American sympathies would lie with India, but first and foremost the Americans would hold off war as long as possible, meanwhile they'd try to neutralize Pakistan's nuclear weapons with help from India, depending on the state of Pakistan at the time the Russians and Chinese might join in as well in the race against the clock.

    When the time comes, we will know what exactly will US response be.

    Jan 7 2013: Let both sides know that there will be global repercussions if either side chooses to use a nuclear weapon and do what is possible to broker a peaceful solution through the United Nations or other diplomatic channels.
