Help with ADHD?

I was diagnosed with ADHD late in life, while struggling through and trying to fight it just can''t afford to quit or lose another job. I am very open minded and wish to learn as much as I can about everything but this memory of mine and lack of focus won't allow it. Please at least. point me in the right direction.

Dec 29 2012: MEDITATION!!!! There is evidence that it works - but it's not a quick fix.

You may find it difficult because of the ADHD, so consider starting with training wheels. Use binaural beats. You must listen to them with STEREO headset, and when the thought try to distract you, if you can't ignore them, just focus on the tone.

There are several types of meditation, but the one you are looking for is the one where you sit comfortably (no lotus position required) and relax into yourself. Let your thoughts go (the goal is to not think). Do this 20 mins 2ce/day for the rest of your life. You will be transformed.

Meditation reduces activity in the amygdala (fear/anxiety center) of the brain. It is responsible for impulsive actions. At the same time it increases activity in the frontal cortex (executive center) that is responsible for RATIONAL long-term decisions. It even thickens the frontal cortex and can increase IQ up to 6 points.

It will probably take 3 months before you notice a change in yourself. It happens so naturally. But it may take years before you & your doctor agree that you are ready to eliminate meds.

There are free binaural beats available on-line. You can also find them on YouTube. Those come with pictures (videos), but I recommend that you close your eyes rather than watch the videos. Your goal is to reduce thought distractions and videos tend to increase them for me. But you can try it both ways and find the way that is most helpful.

This really works. There is growing evidence that meditation is like some sort of a miracle drug.

Dec 31 2012: I feel that you should consult a psychologist as ADHD is not something which can simply be controlled by willpower. Perhaps they will teach you some good coping strategies to cope with ADHD. Other than that, would it be helpful to find a fast paced job where you can stay on your feet?
  • Dec 30 2012: mark - I am an INTJ and a former physics graduate student before my Dad convinced me to bewcome a lawyer.
Okay I had to do something else after I went as far as I could. I tend to try to solve problems. Maybe you don't have a problem. Follow your bliss and find a real Mark job. Be happy and Godspeed. That's all I am trying to say.
  • Dec 29 2012: Pat for some reason it's not allowing me to send that email......send me the answer

" Please don’t get me wrong binaural works, it will take time but it works. NLP well I love NLP but the fact that I can’t retain what I read or listen to sometimes do help that. Meds who doesn’t like Meds if I can remember to take them LOL"

I understand exactly what you are saying, without a doubt but all I wanted was to hear what you are about to say...the real answers....
  • Dec 29 2012: I believe I know what got me here o.k but I need help finding a way out...I'm very smart....I know what the issue is the brain o.k something isn't doing what it should be.
  • Dec 29 2012: I will not settle for something that I have to like so that I can be focused. I want to focus at any moment I want to learn everything and have no limits. And not have to listen to strange Binaural frequencies or read about NLP to do so. I want to read any book and remember its contents even if I hate the book I want to be able to tell what I hate about it and articulate. The sky is the limit for me and I refuse to be stuck jumping up and down 2ft and letting gravity get the best of me. I know there are scientific ways of changing the way my brain fires as a sort of mental tune up. I want to know how to physically fix it not just change it by way of free gimmick.

Well free is always good sorry I lied on that last sentence, but you get what I’m trying to say. I guess I want to turn my brain in to a super computer at any cost. If science has proven to know how the brain fires all its neurons and receptors, modalities and so forth. Well I’m a guinipig and wish to be used as a computer, anything is better than what I am presently going through. Please don’t get me wrong binaural works, it will take time but it works. NLP well I love NLP but the fact that I can’t retain what I read or listen to sometimes do help that. Meds who doesn’t like Meds if I can remember to take them LOL

I really appreciate the way you all have pointed me in directions thank you and I am very grateful that in the past few hours I got more help on TED then in 10 years. Spending so much money and waiting to see psychologists, telling them what Meds I should take. If I had TED 10 years ago I would have been fixed within months or upgraded at the least. Am I rambling sorry I get that way sometimes hey I stayed focused enough to write three paragraphs. I guess I’ll stick to the Binaural, NLP, and Meds and keep on this journey…… Thanks

Dec 29 2012: One thing I forgot to tell you about. Most ppl with ADHD have an ability to "hyperfocus." It's the only way I got through school. You might want to learn how to leverage this ability with your job selection. You will be much happier.

      http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/612.html

For example, if you can play video games for hours without stopping, maybe that should lead you to a career
      choice.

Stop fighting it or medicating it or trying to get your brain to fire differently. It's a gift and very valuable if you learn how to use it correctly. I tell people my brain does not work like other peoples. It does a lot of things at once. And at my age, I have yet to even finish a book I hated let alone remember it. Good luck on your journey.

Dec 29 2012: With all due respect Mark I would be doing you a disservice not to indicate you have bought into the "diagnosis" and are acquiescing to it which will be a self inflicted disability. In some sense I get it is easier and you do not have to try and maybe the government will give you money to be disabled and to the nice drug companies that are going to "help".

Sorry I'm not buying. Try to explain your predicament to a starving child in a third world country or someone with terminal cancer or a soldier with half of his limbs blown off to protect the freedom that you casually discard. Get over it and deal with it.
      • Dec 29 2012: Pat I have had a very rough life, I work very hard and a lot of my best friends served, I know people who are terminally ill. I never asked for this problem ok nothing has been self inflicted. Maybe my personal childhood issues caused it but regardless I'm asking for direction not contribution, My father left me with a mother that had mental issues and the list can go on....I have knowone to blame but myself I should have left home when i was a year old as soon as I knew my mother was ill right.....No I'm fighting I would have in-listed but I didn't graduate.

with all due respect diagnosis=funds your right but I still fight every day and work hard but I want to fix my way of learning to learn why what I learned won't stick and relearn seems to be the thing to do....

Dec 29 2012: "I guess I’ll stick to the Binaural, NLP, and Meds and keep on this journey"

That statement does not indicate that you are fighting?

If you are for real private email me, I have some Real answers to this problem.

Dec 29 2012: When I was a kid they "diagnosed" me with what back then was called "learning disabilities" and prescribed Ritalin. Admittedly it did help me to concentrate better but it also caused me to lose weight and get 4 hr sleep a night which is not much for a kid. After a few months I started throwing the poison in the trash.

Here is the main point I want to make. BE YOUR OWN ADVISER. The hell with the psychobabble. Only recently did I realize that I do not have a learning disability, I had this "diagnosis" stuck in my head for 4 decades. Be careful what you accept as fact.

In fact I am very smart as far as I know, sometimes I think I am almost as smart as John Smith.

Here is what you can do about it. They are saying you have an "attention disorder" first screw what they think. What do you think???

Concentration is a good skill that is acquired and is a major factor in sucess. IF two athletes are competing the one with better concentration will win. Business is the same deal, a profession, an artist, a tradesman, a student.

I and many call this being in the present, the zone, now.

When it comes to study the area that will cause you the most grief is not understanding or misunderstanding the terminology. FIND OUT where you last understood the area that you are having trouble with just at the tail end of where you were doing well is where you misunderstood a word regarding what you are studying.

Loose the crutch it is bullshit. The only person that can fix this is YOU.

Private email me and I will give you some pointers.

Dec 29 2012: ADHD is rampant in my family. I have it to a certain extent. I have to have several projects going at once to be able to switch out and focus on something else for a while. The men in my family have a harder time with it. None of the men in my immediate family ever finished high school (3 + generations).

The job is key. Most of the men in my family do manual work like fix cars and motorcycles or cargo. These tasks do not require a mental focus like accounting would. The accomplishment is the reward and you have to keep at it to learn that.

Medication does help but most of us cannot deal with the side effects. They can be terrible.

There are all sorts of support available and many have helpful tips for organizing in your specific area. So some help organize finances, others help organize work space, others help organize how you do your work. One thing that has helped several people in my family is headphones. Music, or audio books seem to help them stay focused on a task.

Completing a task is the hardest thing. I have learned not to have more than three projects going or they don't get done. It takes practice to learn how to manage and organize so don't expect a quick fix. You have to learn what works for you, not what works for other people that is why it is important to try new things and discard what does not work.

The other thing you need to know is how valuable having ADHD is. Yes it does interfere with modern western lifestyle but it is great. You will tend to be ahead in your thinking, way ahead of most of those who surround you. They think linear and we do not. They have to do one thing, complete it, and move to the next thing. Drives me batty but it's how they work. We can see behind, jump ahead, ump to the side, and see from above all at the same time so our priorities shift faster than most peoples. There is nothing wrong with that.

With practice you will be able to manage and have a great and wonderful life. Trust me on this
  • Dec 29 2012: Maybe self-hypnosis would help, but if not it's medicate or don't Unless you can anchor the work the meds do some early NLP books also talk about ADHD.Of course, your choice of jobs could be a problem too. Talk about wieners and losers has become very popular - I've seen lots of alleged losers, but I've seen few wieners. Be realistic. Godspeed.
    • Dec 29 2012: I've been looking into NLP I understand all of the views and strategies, my lack of focus and memory seems to keep me from retaining the good stuff. And I've seen a lot of losers as well I'm not letting my loss's get in the way I'm way stronger then ever. If I can just find a way to erase and restore the hard drive and wipe the memory in my mind. Or upgrade the software I wouldn't need to worry about losing. I know that I can find another job that's not hard at all. I'm tired of it though and my mind really doesn't kick in when I need it to. Don't get me wrong I have know problem being a loser or a wiener I just want to retain everything about both so I can choose one and stick to it.....
