Is a major natural disaster is required to make people understand the value of nature?

There are thousands of environment protecting bodies whether goverment funded or non-profit organisations but what we are still witnessing is a constant destruction of natural balance. Do you think that a major natural calamity is required to make people understand the value of nature and the need for its protection?

Dec 28 2012: If Sandy was not big enough, I doubt that anything bigger will have any more persuasive power. People tend to believe what they want to believe.
