Is art actually important to a society?

Is art (music, artwork, sculptures, etc) actually important to a society? Is a society with more art going to be more creative, innovative, and intellectual?

    Dec 24 2012: The arts will always be important to the world. As people, we have a need to create. It's part of the human condition. People get closer to reaching their full potential when they express themselves. It makes the world a better place.

      Dec 24 2012: But is it essential to human civilization? Would the world be offering if art wasn't a consent we understood? If so how would it be different?
