Your Idea: A Weapon that creates Peace

Let's face it; War is a business.

How, then, do we create a product of war, that doesn't hurt, maim, or kill, but rather does the opposite and heals, prevents, and stops conflict that a corporate company can patent and therefore make money from, keeping not only innocent people from being harmed, but also feeds the corporate companies' bottom line of keeping investors happy?!?

The idea is simple in effect, and promotes peace whilst still increasing worth.

I just have little idea on what the war product could be, so I'm crowd-sourcing from you, fellow TEDsters, to help build the perfect weapon: A weapon of peace.

Should it be just one weapon of peace, or, just as there are many weapons of war, perhaps there should be multiple weapons of peace that can each be patented by the companies listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_modern_armament_manufacturers and allow such companies to make money from peace?

as always, I'm awaiting your thoughts.....

  • Dec 12 2012: extacsy.....it is a drug that inspires a feeling of shared experience, and love and oneness.....what about rather then killing your enemies with bombs...You allow them to chose taking this drug so they can temporarily not see only the hate and differences, but are now chemical limited to experience a change in the point of view,... This idea is affordable, the death count is measurably lower...but so foreign is this idea...it will be dismissed only based on our bias culturally against drugging anyone against their will...while guns,an eveyrday socially accepted item, slide into our construct as if natural....Just ask yourself one question...If you had to choose between death or A day outside of your point of veiw, seeing life differently(lovingly,co operatively) could you choose something so far from your field of experience in order to have this peace weapon?

Dec 12 2012: the problem with the drug 'extacy' is the come-down.

sure, you'll be friendly and happy for awhile, but for how long? and then what? more extacy?

artificially raising dopamine levels in the brain can have disastrous affects on mood later on in life, not to mention what it does to bones and teeth after prolonged use.

i would rather take a pharmaceutical company pill than one that is possibly made in a toilet bowl, or worse, with worse dangerous chemicals and products added to the mdma part of the pill.

if you can actually acquire pure mdma pills, then by all means i won't attempt to convince you not to take it. i will, however, suggest that there are other methods to raise the dopamine levels in the brain, either naturally, or via a heavily tested pharmaceutical pill. the problem with raising dopamine levels in the brain unnaturally, by either illegal or prescription, is that it takes a lot of psychological repair work to undo the reliance on the pill.

keep in mind - "if it's a drug, then by definition, it's addictive."

back to the out of the box thinking you have come up with - would such an idea create peace?

could you slap on an mdma-release patch on someone who would be in the middle of a conflict and hope for the best? somehow i don't think this would work.

however, it's a very interesting idea, and with the cybernetics industry age coming up, perhaps brain chemical-control via computers built-in to the human body could prevent symptoms of rage, and also help manage mood disorders.
