Your Idea: A Weapon that creates Peace
Let's face it; War is a business.
How, then, do we create a product of war, that doesn't hurt, maim, or kill, but rather does the opposite and heals, prevents, and stops conflict that a corporate company can patent and therefore make money from, keeping not only innocent people from being harmed, but also feeds the corporate companies' bottom line of keeping investors happy?!?
The idea is simple in effect, and promotes peace whilst still increasing worth.
I just have little idea on what the war product could be, so I'm crowd-sourcing from you, fellow TEDsters, to help build the perfect weapon: A weapon of peace.
Should it be just one weapon of peace, or, just as there are many weapons of war, perhaps there should be multiple weapons of peace that can each be patented by the companies listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_modern_armament_manufacturers and allow such companies to make money from peace?
as always, I'm awaiting your thoughts.....

Interestingly, 16-20 years ago, Tupac is quoted as saying "We ain't ready to see a black President." and now in 2012, America has Barack Obama as President.
However, are we ready to change the meaning of war?
W. Ying 10+
There is “a Weapon that creates Peace”, but will not be patented to make money.

Your question reminded me of a saying of Prophet Mohammad PBUH (I will try to find a proper translation and post it here) but my own explanation will be: (Do you want me to tell you about something if you all do then love will spread among all? allow me to explain why.
when a drug is taken that affects the brain, the mind is in an altered state of consciousness, and usual logical, lateral, and non-spontaneous thinking styles are affected heavily. in order to make well-thought-out decisions, the human mind needs these thinking styles to be somewhat appropriate according to the situation. when emotion over-rules logic, spontaneous decisions are made, and could have disastrous effects on (for instance) a leader's decision.
all that being said, with alcohol, it affects the liver in a bad way, and fights break out much more often in crowds where alcohol is being served than, say, a rave in a ware-house or forest.
to be quite honest, i think mdma is much more safer than alcohol in terms of the social spectrum of society, considering it really is just pure mdma and not mixed with other chemicals or agents. i would go as far as to say that alcohol users have a higher risk of death than extacy users. however, there isn't really a sure-fire method to know what's in a small pill that is referred to as extacy, when it could actually be a dangerous substitute like 'fantasy' or worse, often this is unknown, and often this causes deaths.
carolyn mcauley 10+
griffin tucker 10+
sure, you'll be friendly and happy for awhile, but for how long? and then what? more extacy?
artificially raising dopamine levels in the brain can have disastrous affects on mood later on in life, not to mention what it does to bones and teeth after prolonged use.
i would rather take a pharmaceutical company pill than one that is possibly made in a toilet bowl, or worse, with worse dangerous chemicals and products added to the mdma part of the pill.
if you can actually acquire pure mdma pills, then by all means i won't attempt to convince you not to take it. i will, however, suggest that there are other methods to raise the dopamine levels in the brain, either naturally, or via a heavily tested pharmaceutical pill. the problem with raising dopamine levels in the brain unnaturally, by either illegal or prescription, is that it takes a lot of psychological repair work to undo the reliance on the pill.
keep in mind - "if it's a drug, then by definition, it's addictive."
back to the out of the box thinking you have come up with - would such an idea create peace?
could you slap on an mdma-release patch on someone who would be in the middle of a conflict and hope for the best? somehow i don't think this would work.
however, it's a very interesting idea, and with the cybernetics industry age coming up, perhaps brain chemical-control via computers built-in to the human body could prevent symptoms of rage, and also help manage mood disorders.

i don't think it would be too difficult to determine the companies that funded a particular side for a particular war, then determine yearly profit margin differences between the before, during, and after for the war that these companies involved made products for.
then again, i suppose weapons manufacturers sell weapons to governments as a preventative measure, so weapons products may already be stocked. this makes it more difficult (but not impossible) to calculate how much financial gain weapons manufacturers make.

Now i understand where your concern has come from, and i do share it !
Drug idea is very interesting, actually, but why 'to drug' someone ( enemy? )? Maybe DMT should be served at pre war negotiations and the very idea of enemy will probably vanish without a trace.:)
Who knows what stuff native american folks smoked in their pipe of peace when negotiating conflicts ? It was "the way of love and freedom, here on the back of our Earth Mother." Simply put, the smoke coming from the mouth symbolizes the truth being spoken. That is the core of the problem, i guess. The chosen few don't want to tell the truth or maybe they even don't care to know it. lying is so fundamental to our goal oriented, consuming culture, to politics that it has ceased to be lying at all and has transformed into a variant of truth.
The problem is, all governments from right to left don't want 'boundary dissolving' substances to be used, maybe because eventually it will spell death to the status quo : the division into 'us' and 'them'. What will be governments for ? DMT , psychedelics have a bad reputation as addictive dangerous stuff, but alcohol being not less addictive and dangerous when abused is sold at every corner. It's a bit strange, don't you think ? That's why i told you, that it's only the surface. War is a profitable business , because it is made such. Don't take me wrong , i don't think that 'bad guys ' have taken control and are pushing us into the abyss of war; somehow i am immune to conspiracy theories. It simply goes this way, because our common conscious field is in poor state.
natasha nikulina 50+
" All we need is love ! " it's not only poetically but factually true. It's too bad that nobody is listening ! I don't know how psychedelics or dmt work, have never tried anything like that, but if you are searching for a weapon for peace, it may be somewhere there ...or not, while change from within never fails :)
Thank you very much !

But if you get the most distructull power in the world and give it to everyone, that would limit the will each entity would would have to destroy their opponent since they would do the same back to them...
griffin tucker 10+
the only thing that is impossible is the existence of nothing, everything else can be done in my opinion.
a world-wide communication system that limits misunderstandings is an idea that i've had before where upon technology steps between potential conflicts and represents the information being conveyed between individuals to the point of actually preventing conflict by omitting certain information or changing the wording of information, automatically. basically, it's like every single individual has their own language, and a technological translator does the bouncing of information between people.
however, this is a short-term patch to a long-term problem.
a world-wide education system could never be agreed upon by all the governments of the world - however, conflict resolution processes can be taught, and should be taught by all educational institutions around the world to the generations that will be our future leaders.
better yet, if there were an online course that appealed to the next generation of leaders that deals with conflict resolution, then effectively disputes can be stopped more often than not - for instance, if 1 out of 10 people knew conflict resolution tactics to reach an amicable goal for all parties involved, this would not only prevent potential conflicts, but also stop actual conflicts and would result in less disputes.
if it were 1 out of 10 people who knew the tactics, it would prevent or stop at the very least, 3 out of 10 conflicts.
unfortunately, i do not know of a conflict resolution online course, if anyone can refer me to one, please post a link here!
as for everyone having 'a big stick' to fight with, i would consider this comparable to a crowd of people who each have a big stick, and a different crowd of people who have no sticks at all. i would be suggesting that the 'stick' people would be more likely to get hurt.
Ricardo Marques
griffin tucker 10+
i believe we have to do something to create peace, or otherwise wars will simply just keep continuing. i believe it would begin with conflict resolution in the class-room. bullying these days isn't acceptable, but happens. changing the focus of bullying to conflict resolution is a key step in changing our future leaders' behaviour.
Scott Koenraadt
griffin tucker 10+
that being said, this goes the other way, too. professional weapon-holders need to understand the perspective that anti-gun lobbyists are coming from, instead of simply saying "you're wrong," there needs to be a way of managing differences of opinion.
this starts with "i agree to disagree," to get anywhere. instead of simply trying to convert an apple to be an orange, it's my opinion that effective weapon-control begins with educating BOTH sides of the story, but this requires a certain type of leader or representative on each side of the debate to establish effective communication and understanding.
Raul De Maio
Now this means a lot of thing. I distinguish two possibilities: fear of someone and afraid of something.
Either bring peace in a certain area only if they are an enemy / danger in this area and , in my opinion, only for a short period of time because react is our nature.
(when i was child, I thought that playing cards could be a good way to resolve conflicts. I was a child but now i don't think this idea so stupid, naive, probably.)
However it's an interesting problem (i studied war of 900th from the economic point of view as last exam of high school) and I suggest you to read 1984 (probably you've already done) and watch
griffin tucker 10+
living in fear would be considered comparable to the 'fragmentation' phase of war, and although a method of control, has disastrous impacts on the credibility of governments that take upon means of labeling an individual or group 'terrorist' of whom is simply an enemy of the government, but the government is not an enemy of the individual or group.
the general public shouldn't fear the government - ideally, the government should fear the general public. in this way the government is held accountable for it's actions, and allows for change in the government where change is due, instead of what i would refer to as political 'power-trippers' who don't want change, but instead want more power, or their existing power to last longer.
i've said something similar to this before, where upon a politician or leader is in power for the sake of greater gain for themselves, ie. "i know better" or for the greater good of the people, ie. "according to [x] amount of people, [y] should be accomplished to address the concern of [z]."
http://www.ted.com/talks/sean_gourley_on_the_mathematics_of_war.html - check out the fragmentation phase of war - this would be considered the same as 'living in fear' because the people never know when an attack is going to occur, all the people know is that a lot of people will get hurt or killed, at some unknown time.
change the meaning of war, and change the minds of those who want to go to war.

because of natural disasters, the price of food goes up.
food in the near future will also be more expensive because there are simply too many mouths to feed, although, there are scientists working on this problem as we speak.
controversially, beef farms are now being built as multi-story buildings to save room, but this type of farming puts stress on the cows.
however, scientists are also working on creating artificial protein, although in early stages, is basically beef without the cow. it's currently too expensive to purchase for the every-day shopper, but as beef prices go up, the artificial beef price will come down.
i've even heard that because of the food shortage in the future, that we will eat BUGS! - which is actually a high source of protein if cooked the right way.

If that is the case, an idea could be shooting cotton ball as opposed to bombs and helping the cotton industry. Or even better have companies build infrastructure and vital needs for the people that facilitates progress and development as opposed to weapons. I disagree that corporations need to interfere or profit from any of this process. WAR and PEACE is an issue between people and politics. Corporations must stay out totally and let the people and the politicans deal with finding a solution without weapons.
Peace should be achieved by dialogue and in that way perhaps the only companies that will profit are the event organizers.
It appears that the world is now slowly moving towards using their financial and natural resource based clout to negotiate better deals of peace as opposed to threat and damage. In that way the coporations are already profiting in many ways.
griffin tucker 10+
some would say destruction is a part of life. i would say it doesn't have to be, and on top of that, that it can be turned into something else entirely.
although war/peace is between political people and their disagreements, i would say that weapons are the driver.
the weapons themselves don't necessarily need to be stopped being made, in fact, we're entering the space race, and i would make the bold assumption that not every race in this universe would be friendly.
Maaher Sayeed 10+
Man has made and used weapons from the most premitive of times. Only now the corporations make and give then more effecient ones for profit. Giving this esteemed position of power in the hands of the corporations who have a vested interest in global peace or war is not something I agree with. Especially when several organizations have proven to be absolutely callous in upholding moral values within their own organizations towards their staf or displayed deliberate financial irresponsiblity.
I would prefer keep the organizations out, give the people the power, effecient process and voice to negotiate and develop solutions to achieve peace.
Yes weapons with regards to extraterristrial wars or industrial purposes need to exisit but administred with responsible power.

War is not business, it is a means by which business creates profits. War is and has always been thus - You have something I want, You won't give it to me, I must take it from you………

As this is an often occurring situation between neighbours, which will always continue to happen, it will have the same existence a world level. There will always be bullies.
Even education is not going to help because it will only make the bullies into smarter bullies.
If we could only show/proof that if we love others as we love ourselves, that this would make EVERYONE happier, including ourself.
Until that happens it is indeed good to have a military organization, not to start a war but to prevent one. In the meantime we could use our military power and expertise to help those in need in our country and other countries as well.
It is one way to show 'we're getting there'.
griffin tucker 10+
i also disagree that wars will always happen. if it is written in a bible that wars will always happen, and enough people will always believe it, then i'm wrong.
however, i would like to suggest that wars will change in nature, of a blood-thirsty type of war to an information kind of war, until a time that the current age that we will live in will be without war altogether.
is there a way to stop war? give the people something else to do aside from killing and hurting, and perhaps instead a form of co-operation (or realistically, just something else to do) and the kind of war that is faced has changed it's face itself.
Adriaan Braam 20+
I said that because there are some very smart people in jail, or trying to get control of your computer.
To make people aware of the consequences of their actions, OK, but it is not our smarts that make us better people.
Why I think wars will always be there, is because they are a product of evil intentions and control. Also, on a personal level, we will always have heaven, but also hell within us.
There will be wars as long as there are streets in this world where, at night, a woman could not safely walk.
That being said, the reason for our 'situation' is that we have freewill. It is how we use that freedom of choice, every minute of the day, that makes us who we are (and we'll never be perfect).
In addition to that, I believe we are not in this world for the sake of anything in this world. I believe we are here to determine our eternity.
The more people would accept that as our 'situation', the better this world would indeed become. Who gives a hoot if someone else has more money than we do... there have been millionaires that were so miserable they committed suicide.
I base my total belief on this overview of what Swedenborg wrote about our spiritual reality

You're also right about people trying to access my computer (even if you meant in a generally speaking sense) - I have lost access to my main email account for over a month due to hackers, and (although refunded) had money stolen from my bank account. Three anti-virus programs bought later, and I seem (I hope) to have removed the last trojan-horse virus from my computer.
Anyway, back to education, and away from the information war... (is there a difference)
Education could be considered propoganda itself, depending on how incomplete the individual topics that are studied, and also how the facts are presented. However, teaching and education is evolving. As more and more of the y generation loses focus over time, they are able to access 'facts' much more efficiently, and the result is more out-of-the-box thinking with black-boxes, and because of the multitude of information gathered, cross-discipline studies are becoming not only more popular, but in some cases, necessary in the work-force.
The newer generations are growing up learning to take supposed facts with a grain of salt, and truth is the ultimate winner, especially in today's context of rapidly spreading networks of networks of information.
As for people in jail, I've said this before, "I dream of the day that a jail outshines a university."
I would tend to think that suicidal millionaires are unhappy because of regret, not solely because of financial reasons. Their publicity, however, would be more wide-spread due to their financial status.
As for what I've referred to as "privacy becoming something of the past" - if everything is recorded somewhere (most conspiracy theorists would agree that this is true already) then everyone could be accountable for their actions. This doesn't necessarily mean safe dark alleys, but it's beginning to be that way.
Thank-you for sharing the link on spirituality. I imagine many people will find it useful.
Adriaan Braam 20+
Our airplanes, cars and guns have become much better these last decades, but have we as human beings? There is a constant battle going on, everywhere in this world, between people that want to attack and that have to protect. As you said, that is on your computer, in the down-town, money, sex.
Every single item in this world can be used with good intentions or with bad intentions. It is not our (level of) education that determines why we use the item. It is determined by what we love and our priorities or desires and lusts..
I think the best possible 'weapon' that would create peace and thus a better world is this. You may know that when people see a security camera they behave differently then when they think no-one is looking.
If people would get the notion that there is such a thing as a 'higher power'. That someone who cares is constantly looking over our shoulder, someone is making notes in our book of life.
When, after 30 days we get used to thinking and thus behaving that way, we'd be the best human beings ever.
Maybe you know, but Alcoholic Anonymous has found that acknowledging a higher power really helps a person in fighting the bottle. It is one of its steps.

what happens in classicly-adopted education mechanisms is that some students find it harder to find their footing at the beginning due to a multitude of reasons, where as the adjustment period is set in a time-frame for the average student, so some students fall behind at the beginning of when the pace of the class has stepped up, and falls completely behind and the students feel as though they have been betrayed by the forces at work.
what is good about kahn academy is that students learn at their own pace. it is often found that most students who struggle at the beginning of studying kahn academy eventually fire-up and perform better in terms of measurable performance on average to those who are classically educated.
learning at your own pace and learning what you actually want to learn are the two key principles in the new wave of education.

This Peace Weapon would need to improve both the Economy and the Power of all warring nations, and grant everyone's Religious goals. The problem is caused by mutually exclusive goals. If the goal of Country A (see Mr. Winner's comment) is to destroy Country B economically, politically, and religion-wise then satisfying both sides is impossible. Earth's population today is near 7 billion. Back when it was just 4, there was a war and there have been wars ever since. "Ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars. . . nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. . ." (The Holy Bible Mt.24:6,7 KJV). War is a product of Man's rebellion against his Maker. True peace comes only when an individual finds it with God. The Peace Weapon you dream of exists today. Here it is: "(For the weapons of warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exatheth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." (The Holy BIble, II Corinthians 10: 4, 5 KJV). Thank you.

He knew that our economy (and now thanks to the US, the global economy) is a war-based economy. Without war, the economy will collapse. In fact, as any student of the economy will agree, this is true. Any informed student of western history will also agree.
We are now in a position that if we end or even greatly reduce military spending, our economy WILL (verifiably) collapse, which is the part you don't often hear about as the fiscal cliff (in the USA) is discussed. That's why the focus on social programs is front and center in pro-defense-spending circles (FOX news).
How did we get to a war-based economy? The Federal Reserve system that supports private, for-profit, national banks that find war most profitable. But this mind-set goes back to the earliest years of USA history. It was a concern of our founding fathers, who wrote into the constitution that no military appropriation (borrowing) shall be for more than two years.
If you were to look at all of the USA social ills, each could be traced back to our fiscal paradigm. That paradigm included the need for a lot of poor people to act as (tacit) slave labor for the wealthiest, who were granted divine rights by virtue of being born into a certain class.
Even our education system exists to support the war effort (military industrial complex) as the US Dept of Ed mission statement assures us. This leaves us indoctrinated slaves who call slavery, "freedom".
So what is the great weapon to produce peace? Education. Dare to step out of the delusion and educate self with the broadest base of education possible. Then we will not be duped by malicious characters who do not tell us the truth about how the world works, and who assure us how important war is to our well-being and security.

The problem is that even educated people can be seduced. war, hate, and greed are part and parcel of who we are. Until the Viet Nam war we stood as a country and backed our troops. When Hanoi Jane Fonda defied the United states and committed acts of treason in aiding and abeting our enemy and was not punished for it all of the rules were rewritten. The truth about Bengasi is very important. It will determine what the people will and will not accept from our leaders and statesmen.
As a combat veteran I would love to see your idea evolve.

from a land down under it would seem my idea is very upside down.
this is in effect the idea, actually, to turn a _profitable_ weapon that also creates peace, perhaps by means of trade or business.
this idea has been evolving slowly since my last posts about war and coalescence and fragmentation of war scenarios with displacement of attacks.
if there is coalescence, protesters and potential attackers are grouped together, the attacks are more frequent, but not as many people get hurt or killed. where as with fragmentation, protesters and potential attackers have been spending a lot of time alone (or, at least, more time in smaller groups) due to events such as curfews or other political events that are designed to change the course of the war, and the attacks are more organised which means more people get hurt or killed, but the frequency of the attacks is lessened.
it seems the more you try to control a mob, the more they will revolt, but if you let them protest so much so that they are out of control, the more chaos is endured.
i am in just the same position as the new zealander physicist sean gourley, where i do not know if it would be better to create an artificial political event to promote coalescence to the point of temporary chaos, or a different artificial political event to promote fragmentation to the point of living in fear and not knowing when the next attack will happen, but knowing that it will be huge.
on top of that, sometimes an expectation of one way of coalescence, or to the other, fragmentation has the opposite effect in what are supposedly predictable events of coalescence or fragmentation outcomes.
http://www.ted.com/talks/sean_gourley_on_the_mathematics_of_war.html
there is a pattern. i believe with enough data, and enough number crunching, wars can be stopped with not exactly education, but somewhat, and not exactly propaganda, but somewhat, but more importantly, truth at hand.
i believe transparency of decisions is key.

My take is that things are the way they are because people agree to the way things are. So to makes changes the changes have to center around agreement. The coalescence of this agreement is the culture. There are subversives who do unethical things for self gain. The culture has to be educated into vigilance against such specious ideas.

No they are unaware of what they have become. They are indifferent. They target an enemy for personal gain.

fear campaigns would be the last resort for getting to stop a potential fraudster.
however, fear campaigns would _not_ work on everyone, and it has been proven that positive reinforcement has a longer-lasting impact than negative or fear-based reinforcement.
it saddens me that these kind of fraudsters are indifferent.

You are presenting an old paradigm.
You say..."The problem is that even educated people can be seduced. war, hate, and greed are part and parcel of who we are".
Perhaps those are some of the traits we have chosen to focus on as humans. However, respect, acceptance, compassion and empathy are also traits that we share as humans. What might happen in our world if we focus on some of those more beneficial traits?
You also say..."As a combat veteran I would love to see your idea evolve."
As the wife, sister and daughter of combat veterans, I would also like to see peace evolve in our world. To do this, we must take the very first step, and truly believe it is possible.
