Debate: Having children should be regulated or licensed

We need a license to drive a car, to run a business or to become part of professional bodies. Why on earth would we leave something as difficult and demanding of thought, care and responsibility to those that may not be fit to do so?
Too often those who should not have children do have them, often leaving the child ill prepared and in many cases a burden upon society. Should there not be some psychological evaluation people should take before they are deemed capable of performing the responsibilities required of a parent?

Closing Statement from Varlan Allan

Thanks to everyone for contributing to this conversation. It was difficult to think such aspects of human life need to be considered in our current society, but we have all imparted valuable perspectives and considered the logic of such possibilities.

Ultimately, society will decide what is best for itself. But we must not deter from asking the difficult questions and what its impact could mean for the future stability of our global community.

  • Nov 14 2012: Of course we need standards for raising children, but the task in totality looks too huge. What if we work backwards, and collect thousand of nightmare data from those that had very stressful limiting childhoods and llist as an agreed on definite NO. The end result is we system check the social construct for evidence the behaviour which is unwanted for children is not a current marketed meme. If the system is ripe with the undesirable concepts ,then the system is to go on trial for its enviormental effect. If the individual parent is unique in their dsyfunctionality then prescribed training and governing is required. If we avoid super black and white thinking, and beleive lack of control or resources are cofactors in bad parenting, you dont create a witch hunt mentality while your creating good effects. I have also observed many people cant raise a teenager ,while a child seems easier. My dad used extreme violence with me,and my mother sought medical evidence I was genetically flawed. Therapists were called, but coached by adults to see a bias...so under I went...Today children may be slightely more listened to,really so far adults avoid exposure all the time,so many kids are thrown under the bus.
