Is there a correlation between "lonerist" tendencies and intelligence? If so, what is it? causal? indirect?

So many great minds have belonged to loners. Isaac Newton is one of the best examples. It seems like intelligent people are generally predisposed towards introversion and being alone. What does the TED community think?

Perhaps, intelligent people have a lot going on in their heads that keeps them busy, hence less need to socialize.
