A thought for TED on a community level, rather than mass outreach

TED topics are discussed on the mass level with the assumption that somehow innovation gets seeded with mass outeach. This assumption while sometimes true is not true in the American experience. The American experience is that community of vitality is critical to seed and germinate innovation, not mass thinking alone.

Take the case of Ben Franklin's Junto Club that existed at the dawn of innovation 1776. There were only 12 or so members of the Junto Club. And yet out of that experience and philosophy of "self help and mutual help", some of the greatest innovaions were germinated by the Junto Club Members, including the U.S. Post Office, first Public Library, and Volunteer Fire Fighers. Community commitement was a key emotion behind Junto Club along with the philosphy of self help and mutual help.

TED's current process of mass outreach ignores this legacy of the American experience at the very beginning of that nation that still keep on giving every day to posterity.

Closing Statement from Avi Dey

Twin Project Fairfax C2C Community Alliance that has evolved over the last two years from the philosophy of strengthening a "Community of VItality__Fairfax VA Hometown USA".

Conversation among a small group, similar to Ben Franklin's Junto Club was helpful. Recently Identifying U.S. Government's Dept of Education was most helpful as the philosophy and protocol developed for Twin Project Fairfax C2C is a "good fit for Ed.Gov's initiative called "Inter_Faith Campus Initiative" to which 350+ colleges and universities across the nation has agreed to participate. The mission of the two key goals that is to enable the Ed.Gov's initative are two as follows:

(01) Participating and qualified college or university must submit proposals that strengthens education on a community level
(02) Same proposal must include an element of "community revitalitzation".

Conversation: it is up to the college or university to execute these two key goals as they so choose to do so within the perspective of "Inter-Faith Campus Initiative".

One barrier now is that , this ed.go iniative has no fedral funding behind it as such. But funding already approved by other federal agencies would qualify as "seed funding" if approrpriate. Private Public Partners (PPP) on a community level is required.

Even More Conversation:
Twin Project Fairfax C2C Community Alliance was designed with these two key goals in mind but separately. But when exposed to Ed.Gov's initiatve via fedarl governent's internet conference, realization was made that the "Twin Project Fairfax C2C" meets the key reuqirements of the Ed.Gov's initiave and can be used as a prototype by any qualified college or university who choose to do so.

  • Oct 20 2012: Yes, I am aware of the current format of the TED events that is at the local level. This existing model does not fit this topic.

I am discussing a different type of TED event for future. One that now does not exist as a "better fit" to this topic of Community of Vitality__Culture of Creativity.

Oct 20 2012: Could you describe what it is that you envision, please, so members of this community can respond to what you suggest?

Oct 20 2012: The American experience is so changed in my own lifetime that what was is no more.

I grew up knowing all of my neighbors for more than a block in either direction, and I lived in a small city (not a village). Today, I live in a village and know very few. With two working parents, the community spirit is largely gone. Families are too busy and children no longer play in the streets and common areas. They're at planned sports activities or inside playing video games. Where once neighbors would engage in conversation, now we simply wave at strangers.

I grew up trusting my neighbors. I no longer do. (Aggressive religion and politics has destroyed it.)

But even if that weren't the case, TED serves a great purpose. If something is working in a remote village in india, perhaps it can work in my home town. Diversity is a STRENGTH. More information is always a good thing, and TED certainly does offer more information.

Oct 20 2012: Avi, Are you suggesting that TED should be a local conversational tool to resolve issues that are specific to the community/county.

Just addressing mass outrerach or world platform .... When a person identifies their country in their bio and respond to a conversation I get a feel for how they feel for their leadership as well as our (US) leadership. How the media of one country expresses a event is not the same as how we recieve the news in our country.

The attack in Lybia that killed an ambassador was seen by some as caused by an isult to Islam ... by others as a terrorist attack .... The embassy in Ciaro issued an appology and was backed by the Secretary of State .... later the President stated it was a planned terrorist attack.

Since this is an election year we will learn of the real truth in history. In the mean time the comments from our foriegn members give some balance and inspires thought to those who have not drank the koolade and are of an inquiring mind.

I value input from both sides and remain in a constant learning mode.

    • Oct 20 2012: Your Valued Point 01: Strengthening Community Safety Issue:

Conversation: You have used an example of attack on U.S. Embassy as an example of Community Safety Issue. This is a narrow topic but important. Bringing one terrorist to justice is for a criminal act is a different issue than creating the community level safety issue where infrastucture can be developed to prevent before than react with violence for violence such event. On the Domestic Side take the case of a Ph.D. Student at State University at Colorado who randomly killed innocent people at a theater. What was missing in education of that person ? Non-Cognitive Skills perhaps ? Surely this young man had sufficient cognitive skills to be accepted in a Ph.D. program of a university in USA ? This topic and related topics have been discussed by TED Speaker, Education Expert, Ken Robinson, Ph.D. as a reference point.

Oct 20 2012: I think that we have narrowed it down.

My state/community issues would greatly differ from yours. Virginia Tech is in hte news quite often for sports, and campus shootings but that is about all I know of your states problems. I almost forgot Vick went to school there so animal cruelty is another issue.

In my state we have gun running FAST AND FURIOUS ... thanks to the federal dept of Justice .... No border security ... thanks to the Dept of Homeland Security .... drug smuggleing thanks to cartels and Homeland security ... ranchers getting shot by drug runners .... illegals that have cost our state billions ... and a political lawsuit about once a month from the Dept of Justice that have cost us billions. All of these are unplanned budget killers driving us into bankrupcy. The worst part is that the Dept of Homeland Security has posted signs in the lower third of our state that travel in this area is dangerous and not advisable. That is the protection we get from the feds that are charged with border security by the Constitution.

Unless the administration changes there is no discussion about Arizona's problems. They are political issues. However to us they are very personal and deadly.

My discussion about your state would be from a total lack of knowledge and not very helpful.

There are 28 states that are on the verge of bankrupcy and Obamacare will push them over the edge we could discuss that but is not really a community thing but rather a national issue.

Based on that I return to my original statement that input form many view points, media sources, and political differences helps me to better understand both us and them.

Oct 19 2012: Hi, Avi. I am not certain I understand what sort of responses you want.

Are you aware of TEDx, which is an initiative in which you can host a TED-like conference in your own location?

Or are you suggesting that it would be useful and fruitful to organize on a local level through something like Meetup gatherings of people to screen TED talks together, talk about them, and maybe act on them?
    • Oct 20 2012: Yes, but I am discussing a different type of TED event. One that now does not exist as a "better fit" to this topic of Community of Vitality__Culture of Creativity.
