Is what happens in life based on a persons luck?

Some say that in order to be successful in life in any category, a person's luck is what gets them there. And other's say that not to believe in luck, "Luck is what the person does for him or herself." Which is more accurate?

Oct 10 2012: There are numerous definitions of "luck". One of the official dictionary definitions is:

"Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions." In this regard, it is viewed as a purely mathematical outcome concerning probability and odds of something happening, such as winning the lottery or contracting a deadly disease.

As far as a person being successful in life and "getting them there" (as stated in the topic narrative), I prefer this unofficial definition:

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Oct 18 2012: there is no such thing called 'luck'.When something happened in someone life, there must be something that gets that person there. It is not luck but it is the effect of what we have done.It does not make sense when we did nothing to get something. There must be a tiny action that we did before we get something. So,what happens in our life is based on our own action no matter how big or small is that action.

Oct 13 2012: Luck is being on the right spot at the right time.

It happens more often when you live in the flow of things in trust and with hope. Thinking positive helps complaining doesn't.

Oct 13 2012: Just look around more closely.

It can happen that with some more effort the result becomes better but this says nothing about luck in general.

Some of it yes, luck plays a crucial part in business.

"If wealth was the inevitable result of hard work and enterprise, every woman in Africa would be a millionaire"

    I love that quote.

Oct 10 2012: i prefer to it as destiny.there indeed exists destiny .and we can do nothing with it ,while that is not to say that we should do not .maybe 50 percent .and 50 percent .if you work hard i think you can have a much better destiny ,many thins we can not control ,we just think somthing gift happens with us ,
and if you consider it as a individual case .i think you can have a much better motivition,

and do we really know where our talent is
  • Oct 10 2012: Actually what we percieve as luck is just another persons actions coinciding parallel to our own ambitions and desires. Bad luck is when it runs perpendicular and gets in the way of our plans and such.

To be honest it is both, it is both the reactions from the unforeseeable, and the forseeable.
  • Oct 10 2012: Luck is a word that means different things to different people.

People who believe that they are solely responsible for everything that occurs in their life, and that they somehow have complete control over their own future, are delusional. Accidents happen. Some of the very best people ever born had dismal lives due to accidents completely beyond their control. Some people enjoy success due to factors that have absolutely nothing to do with their own virtues.

Life is not entirely about luck, but it certainly plays a part.
