Sucessfully market global warming and interest society in helping the environment by talking about money.
Tell a man his Petrol consumption is helping to increase the acidity of the Atlantic Ocean and he'll shrug.
Tell him that using his washing machines energy consumption is playing a role in unlocking Methane in the Polar Ice caps leading to a cascade effect of Global Warming and he'll shrug once again..
Tell him that by buying one of a selection of cars with will cut his petrol costs in Half and that he'll save $100 a year on his electricity bill with an energy efficient washer; See what he says then..
The point of this (very reality-based) scenario is a demonstration of why much of the world have little care about global warming or performing any action that will help reduce its impact.
Global Warming is marketed the wrong way.
In the attempt to fight climate change, reduce carbon emissions and use less energy, the focus of the marketing campaign has been to appeal to peoples care for nature, something which only exists in the same way as people who 'care for the worlds population' don't shed a tear for the man in Mongola getting run over at this moment --People care in the abstract. Its not an argument against people, Its just how it is.
In order for us to truly convince people to combat Climate change we have to appeal to what matters to them: Money.
With energy saving techniques and progressive technology comes savings,
and in the time of a recession the appeal of saving on bills and reducing costs is what will (somewhat unknowingly) drive society to reduce carbon emissions by choice.
