Sep 23 2012: According to my experience I think that every sect in our country is a lot more different from the other although some have very minor differences and the awful thing is that sometimes people of different school of thoughts ready to kill each other just because of their beliefs.

  • Sep 23 2012: Sects have been collectivized by individual fouders within a religion.
  • Sep 23 2012: Officially: nothing, it's completely arbitrary when you think about it logically.

Unofficially: political power (past and present), number of adherents and age of the belief system (mormonism has the same number of adherents as Judaism but because it is so young and never controlled a country of its own it's not taken as seriously, that will change over time).
