What is the most important invention of the past 50 years?

    Sep 21 2012: The invention of lame SF movies, accompanied by the discovery that you can sell SF from the fifties provided you update the costumes and use holographic touchscreens.
    Sometimes it's worse than all the Philip K Dick infatuation, and it addresses predarwinian questions to a 2012 audience. Anyone seen Prometheus?

    Seriously, though, I'd say the LASER is one invention that has unlocked pretty amazing stuff for us. PCBs, Data storage, medecine and ultimately quantum computers.
