Do we always create problems or do they just happen

Just an idea. A question that needs some thought process to be answered.

    Survival is a problem. Evolutionary scientists have estimated that of all species that have ever lived on Earth, more than 90% failed to solve this problem, so far.

    Sep 7 2012: Here is the experiment: Find a place which can be observed without influencing the system*. Determine if there any problems there. If the answer is no I think it might be shown that problems are a uniquely human phenomenon.

    *To influence the system will almost certainly create a problem.

    Sep 7 2012: You can say that as long as there are people, there will always be problems. Problems is a subjective thing, so if we take away subjection (get rid of people), then there won't be any more problems because no one would view them as problems.

    Problems is also scalar and can also be measured in an arbitrary quantity because the degree of how much something is a problem can be compared to the degree of how much other things are problems. You have big problems vs small problems.

    Sep 7 2012: Aside from Natural disasters/problems, I believe every problem is a man made.. Every flow/process/entity by nature is in a perfect spin. It's us that takes matters in hands and then either deliberately or accidentally, we end up in problems.
    Just my theory- If you disagree, put up an example? incase they just happen

    How they occured is of little interest ..... How we go about resolving them is the mark of the person.

    Adjust .... adapt .... overcome.

        You can stand out there and think, think further but I will respect the force and take cover.

      Sep 7 2012: I think logic doesn't work that way, the first thing comes to mind is How! no matter any situation you are in

        Sep 7 2012: Perhaps. When things go south I want the facts of what are we facing. I want to nuteralize the situation as soon as possible and return to normal operations.

        I have worked for people who want the head of the person who caused this right now and the problem is still raging on. I find those people being more concerned about how it will impact them than what the problem is or how to solve it.

        Fire fighters fight the fire and determine the cause later.

        I guess that we each employ our seperate logic to the situation.

          Sep 7 2012: hmm, good point.. so 'How' would be situation specific then. Because you can not just let things happen and if you determine the 'How' factor, may be you can prevent them

        Sep 7 2012: You bet. Once things are under control we always analyze the situation to install preventative measures.

        The absolute worst managers want to point a finger and seek a head to cut off. If there is a clear violation of policy and procedures than corrective action must be taken. However do it reluctently and after a through investigation. You will be seen as a better boss than most. They may not like you but they will consider you fair and give that respect.

    We dont have absolute power over nature and circumstances; and there are human beings who turn themselves to monsters and fiends by their evil acts.

    But there are problems that are caused by our wrong choices, or by our ignorance, or by our failure to act.

    Sep 7 2012: Both the discussion seems to indicate. However, it does often seem that no good deed goes unpunished or resented. Didn't the Budha note that existence is a problem Just imagine that you are a mouse in a lab and alll the neat challenges that your master has prepared. Yes, pretend that there are problems for yo9u to solve.

        Your comments remind me of a statement a retired engineer friend of mine often makes...."it's not a problem....it's a feature"! Challenges are part of the human life experience.

        I agree with you that we have evolved to a certain point, and as thinking, feeling humans, we have the opportunity to be mindfully aware, look at history for the purpose of learning, and make better decisions which may benefit us as individuals AND the whole.

    Sep 7 2012: It depends what you incliude in your definition of problem. Some forest fires start without human impetus. All earthquakes do. These then cause problems for living things.
