Is it better to try and to fail, or to never try at all? The latter!
o The cliché says it’s better to try and to fail, but I do not think that is entirely true.
o If you are passionate about something, by all means, try and fail! It’s the best way to learn!
o But if there is something that you aren’t truly passionate about, there’s no need to waste precious mental energy trying something that doesn’t intrigue you.

To me trying implies that the results are not definite and potentially fraught with failure ( and success! ). In the things that I am passionate about, I tend to move ahead without much concern about the outcome because I know I am committed. Failure will simply point me in a new direction and will not deter my enthusiasm.
In those areas where I have little knowledge or interest, I tend to hesitate to move ahead because even smaIl failures will stop me in my tracks and keep me from new experiences.

If you're not passionate about your endeavors - maybe this is not what you should be doing.
If you are passionate about your endeavor I think everything you attempt that doesn't quite work as you planned, is a learning curve - and if headed- leads you toward achieving your goal !

When people advise this, they are suggesting to someone who WANTS to do something but fears failure that it is better to try and fail than never to give the project a chance.
The situation is almost always one in which the person either has an exaggerated idea of the likelihood of failure or of the costs of failure.
This advice (better to try and fail) would not be good if the costs of failure were enormous, such as in jumping off a tall building without a parachute.

In the pursuit of excellence, it is important to note that there will be a difference between our expectations and the reality of our success. Great achievers usually wonder why people seem to be overly impressed by their works and efforts. This is because excellence would have become a norm to them and their dreams remain bigger that the celebrated reality.
In the end, someone who pursues excellence will be clearly different from someone who is comfortable with mediocrity as his or her standard.
