Learning in schools ought to immediately be supported with adequate ways to practice what is learned.

I have always said that the way we learn stuff in school leaves a long gap, and for a long time with our actually practicing what has been learned so far.
There is a huge difference between what we learn in school and what is practiced in the work place. It's only in sports that people and students have the opportunity to not only practice what they learn but to also earn rewards from it immediately while they are still in school, that is why kids in school want to be basketball athletes, football stars, because they can see their mates already reaching heights in that career, because they have the opportunity to throw in all their creativity, they can see their career progress while learning, and know precisely and immediately if this is what they want to do for the rest of their life. They are in school and already making impact in the "workplace", they are fully aware of the whole process and reaping wins, respect and money even while in school.
Our learning system ought to change to that, learning should be accompanied side by side with field experiences without waiting to graduate and look for a job then start practicing in full what was learned years previously. The universities are turning up thousands of graduates every year who have lost their sense of creativity because of the stereotyped learning processes taught in school. That is why people like Bill Gates and William Boeing had to drop out of school to be who they really want to be. If they remained, I don't know what would have happened.

  • Sep 22 2012: as a nurse educator, this is a method utilized frequently. Theory content is taught in class with practice in the clinical setting. Case studies are a wonderful way to bring learned topics into actual practice. Unfortunately, our education system has reinforced the idea of compartmentalization which makes it difficult for many students to "connect the dots" and see the "big picture". I am always looking for better visuals, videos, presentations that can "show" an idea rather than simply discuss the idea. But in the end, there still remains the BIG TEST to see if your competent. But most students remember stories, real life examples of a topic rather than the words on a page of a textbook. I continue to look for these visuals to drive home a subject to assist students with seeing the big picture.
    I'm fascinated with the research coming......

    Aug 29 2012: This is currently being practiced in the Singapore school systems. They have six core subjects and a practicium.

    In the US the goal is find the correct answer with no application required

    I believe that this practice is why Singapore is number one in the PISA exams and blew everyone else away

    Aug 28 2012: That learning cannot happen without practice and application has, indeed, been a well accepted finding in education for certainly a half century. This is one reason case studies in whoich students grapple with authentic questions has been a vital part of education in some countries, at least, for that long and why authentic laboratory experimentation rather than listening to lecture or watching videos is best practice in science education.

    While laboratory work may be limited by the resources a school has to fund equipment and facilities, case studies involve no such costs. They also work regardless of whether in that time and place it is difficult because of economic conditions to arrange for paying or unpaying jobs for students.
