What does it mean when it is said, "You can't have your cake and eat it too?"

I have asked this question of so many people, only to find that very few can explain it's answer. It is a profound statement about how we live and experience our lives. Yet, very few comprehend it's meaning.

The answer is:

Once the cake is eaten, it no longer exists. If you want to have your cake, don't eat it. If you want to eat your cake don't expect to have it.
