Bio, ecological and organic food

During last few years there are new products in the market with a sign that reads BIO. As you have noticed the competition is growing the manufactures have to keep up with it and in same way beat the competition.
This leads to create new products or change their communication style.

But these “new” products called BIO how reliable can they be where in some cases it is made by the same manufacturing companies?

I agree some of them tastes better than the products that have been on the shelves for generations. But who can guarantee that when these BIO products take over the market will keep its quality? How much are we as consumers aware of its process of production?

Do you consume BIO products?
If YES – what is your experience?
If NO – what is your belief?

      Aug 20 2012: Hi James

I haven't been in US, I live in Europe and nowadays there products in supermarkets with a BIO sign on it.
Which stands for Biological .... (whatever) Such a BIO black tea, BIO coffee, BIO milk, BIO chocolate, BIO eggs, etc - list is endless.

this is not new in market, and certain marks have the ABC product with BIO in on the packets.
and they also have the same product as they used to have selling the same price as they used to, but this BIO has higher price and mostly in green packets.
and there are new small shops, called NATURE as they sale only BIO stuff.

      Cheers

Aug 20 2012: Hmm, I don't know if there are BIO products in US but if there are, I've never noticed before...
        • Aug 22 2012: You may have noticed, "bio" is the european label for so called organic foods.

Aug 22 2012: Ah, I see. My mom has been telling me to eat more organic food because they don't use pesticides and those other chemicals/hormones for the food.

        But it's more expensive man...
        • Aug 23 2012: Well, they use copper instead of pesticides.

A pesticide has the advantage only to kill the specific target, that is why they became modern once-people forgot that or want to ignore it. The traditional methods had the disadvantage that they killed without aiming, and sadly often enough the consumer.

The organic apple, the megastar or organic food evangelists, is sprayed between twelve and eighten times with copper. Thats why they have to move the whole apple field to a new place after a time, and the land can not be used for food plants for a very long time. That is the simple reason, why organic farmers produce less than modern farmers-because they literally poison their own ground, at a certain point it is even too much for the plant. Can food be healthy, when the method producing it leads to land on which this plant will not grow any longer? This does not happen with pesticides...

The copper gets washed out, what means, it goes into ground water-but a minimum copper kills you over the time, while pesticide mostly does not do you any harm, as you are no fungus, but a human.

So, like every religious belief also the organic religion works just in paradise, but sadly not down on earth. Basically it is hunting for the simple minded, that believe yesterday must have been better than today. Yes, they sure died at 30 and below because they could not stand the fun of life anymore... ;)

Aug 23 2012: Hmm, the main goal is to somehow preserve/protect food before consumption while maintaining original nutrients while not causing detriment, which is caused by the preservative, to the consumer's health.

So is there a possible way to preserve the food while not losing any sort of nutrients or altering it enough to become harmful?

Aug 23 2012: Oh I just found an article: http://www.green-blog.org/2010/05/19/5-reasons-why-pesticides-are-bad/

To summarize the article about bad effects of Pesticides:

        1) Acute exposure can kill you.
        2) Chronic Exposure can lead to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease (neurological damage)
        3) Chronic Exposure increases the chance of developing endocrine and reproductive disorders
        4) Pesticide spray can drift through the air, can be carried thousands of miles and contaminate public water.
        5) Persistent pesticide use over long periods of time results in lower crop yields, reduced soil fertility, and increased susceptibility to attack by new forms of pests and disease.
