Does Cloud Computing Change IT?

Cloud computing is a new concept. Does it change the IT world?

The idea is not entirely new. When computers were expensive some were used in "data centers." A bunch of computers were made available for anyone who needed them and could afford to pay an hourly rate. This way a bunch of small business, schools and individuals would share the cost.

Today, cloud computing can mean much more than just sharing the costs. What does it mean to you?

Aug 17 2012: Yes it does indeed.

You can now upload/download files to virtually anyone in the world who has a computer/network connections. You can sync the same exact data to multiple devices. This model has greatly increased information travel, data storage, convnenience and efficiency. It has shaped the way a lot of IT companies now do business.

Cloud Computing also brings about more impactful risks like what if someone hacked your cloud files, or if someone were to intercept your stream of data from server-client. If all your data was stored in the cloud, then the consequences has become much greater if anything happens to the server.

And just like Debra said, cloud computing, just like most new IT, also raises more ethical issues about privacy.
