What is the true and real value of TED?
Ideas, especially those not informed by experiment and empiricism - no matter how novel or imaginative they might be - are of no use except for their entertainment value. For ideas to be 'worth spreading', they must have the potential to be worthy of being translated into practical and useful benefits and policy. The problems facing humanity today have to do more with sustainable development, peace, the environment, and a plethora of want for social and economic justices. For all the interesting and thought-provoking quality of the ideas on this forum, what - in the grand scheme of things can we claim we have 'really' contributed to those issues by these 'talks' ?

I hope that someone with resources, perhaps a smart temp hired by the Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation, is looking over our conversations, hunting for new ideas worth an investment. Someone should.

This is a good thing. This is what happens on TED.
There is always a war of words in the world; but only the truth stands the test of time.
In the early 60s, black South Africans rose against the apartheid system, but it took years of repeating the words against the system, to bring it to its kneels in 1990.
Good ideas may seem slow in their spread; but at some point they will stand on their merit.

For some, a speaker may become a role model or mentor who steers them into new active directions.
For some, their quality of life is improved by understanding more about an issue or about people's diverse ideas about an issue.
For some the main value is in the joy of personal connection or entertainment.

I have been wondering who is harvesting the many ideas for review and then eventual development. Will someone or an organization become wealthy developing ideas published here? Maybe.
It would be difficult to say TED is worthless. Its true value may be in the personal experiences of participants. Who of us can define that for others? We all have opinions.

Anything has as much or as little value as we perceive it to have. The fact that we can all connect around the world with ideas worth spreading, is VERY valuable to me. From there it is up to each of us to apply the information to ourselves as individuals, to our families, communities, and to the global cummunities as groups of people who are ready, willing and able to create individual lifestyles and global circumstances which are beneficial for the whole:>)

2. The value is what you could get selling TED
3. The value is the value created in various economies due to what people have learnt from TED or losses avoided from communication or learning.
4. Money saved that would have been spent on other past times or information sources
5. Intangible value from the joy of learning and interacting

Ideas revolving in and around a specific medium does provide us with a sense of exploring deep into the medium.
As you said: 'Ideas to be worth spreading, they need to be divulged into practical benefits'.i do completely agree with you but to turn it into reality,we need to have a sense of mere knowledge about what we need to do inorder to make it successfull practically.
