Similar projects like the Sahara Forest Project?

I was looking into some interesting energy projects using innovative technologies on a global scale and I came across the Sahara Forest Project. A really neat idea and one that should be further explored IMO. I was wondering if anyone knows of similar projects where renewable solutions are the answer to complex multiple problems/issues?

    Aug 2 2012: Well there was one thread somewhere here that said there was this idea where we replant seeds of rainforest using a gatling gun on a helicopter

      Aug 2 2012: In Australia we re-vegetate old mine sites using a green sticky liquid that is a fertiliser with seeds in it. It's sticky so the seeds don't blow away before the germinate. It can be sprayed from the air or through fire hoses.
