The radiant heat left over from the big bang give's us spherical image of the universe. Why they say it is flat?

All around the globe if we look the sky at night we will see stars no? Intuitively it seems to be isotropic no? Maybe the flatness have a tickness? Don't get that part!!

    Jul 31 2012: Any description of the universe is a model which makes a degree of sense of the observable facts. A good model will, for a while, be capable of predictions which can be validated by subsequent observations. But they are merely the models we use to develop our limited understanding, not absolute truths.

    Jul 31 2012: Well I don't get it more because maybe we can't visualize this. We can't observe it with our eyes and we can't make a mental image either. Only can be seen trough mathematics maybe.

    Join the club, lots of things about the Big Bang don't make sense.
    When we look out into space we get red shift all round. Logically that would put us the centre of a sphere, but that is unacceptable. Even weirder is quantised redshift. The mind boggles.

      Jul 30 2012: Peter I can solve one of your problems. Firstly there are about 100 blue shifted galaxies so you can't say they're all red shifted, though about 99.9999999999% of them are red shifted it's still not all.
      And red shift in every direction here's an easy explanation. get two pieces of paper, draw a 4x4 grid of dots on this piece of paper, make sure they're equal distances from each other say 2cm. Then on the second piece of paper draw the same 4x4 grid of dots but with now 4cm between all the dots. Now this is the cool bit. Select one of the dots on the smaller grid, then line it up to it's counterpart on the larger grid. If you've to hold the two pieces of paper up to a light to see through them then do so. Now what you'll appear to see is that every other dot appears to have moved away from the dot you've chosen. But that's not true. Pick a different dot, line it up with itself on the other sheet and the same phenomena happens with this new dot.
      This is the best way to explain the amount of red shift. So just imagine these dots were galaxies, no matter where you are everything appears to be moving away from you. Please do this it's really simple and answers your query.
