What are some ways that we can fight the oppression of women around the globe? (Read Half the Sky).

THere are so many injustices against women around the globe. How can we take steps towards recognizing these injustices and doing something about them?

Mar 31 2011: I think Salim Solaiman put it well below:

First : Aware, educate people (not only women)
    Second: Stand for it
Third : Fight for it if needed (I don't mean war or violence)
    Fourth : Don't give up

But I would add that we need to support (with $) the women IN the places where oppression is worst. Half the Sky makes a strong argument that finding the local women leaders who are actively seeking change is one of the most important ways to support real change on the ground.
  • Mar 19 2011: I think we need to educate public and men about how women (esp. in developing countries) are being oppressed and beaten. We need to show that if we make women's rights and freedom our priority then everyone will benefit. We need to equalize the influence of men and bring more understanding and empathy by including women in negotiations, decisions etc.

Women in developing countries should also have the right and be able to attend educational institutions so that they can get access to better jobs. Educated women have, on average, less children which will help to deal with overpopulation in the world.

I see some very positive trends when watching TED talks where brave women are taking charge of their future. I hope that UN Women organization will further improve women's lives and educate others about the problems women are still facing.
  • Mar 29 2011: Educate men.

Mar 29 2011: Educate all, who so ever you come across. This suggestion would go along lol
  • Mar 29 2011: I think two things will help.
1 stop stigmatising and labeling women (both men and women do this)
2 give women sexual freedom. Let them find their own pleasures. educate them their pleasures

Mar 29 2011: In my view, women should be treated equally as men are. There are lots of sayings in Holy Books, about women's rights and certain things that should be respected by men over there women. These understandings can be more understood by reading the devine knowledge given to us, and understanding the values of our partners. Women are the source of growth to population, they are much patient in terms of emotions and actions, we should understand the importance of them and the values created by women since the beginning of this life :)

Mar 29 2011: Start from your own place though now a days you can reach everywhere virtually and may do the following
First : Aware, educate people (not only women)
    Second: Stand for it
Third : Fight for it if needed (I don't mean war or violence)
    Fourth : Don't give up
  • Mar 28 2011: i think that a better education without religion can do it. Learn to child that it's great to be a woman with her sexuality, that to want equality is good, to learn how to the little girls to express for their right

Mar 28 2011: I like all the ideas. Education I think is the most important, as was said.

Sometimes though there needs to be more policing. A crack down. Hateful minds are hard to educate. And, sometime I think people (both men and women) give into society expectation. Not to say that girls shouldn't play with dolls, but do our best to be blind to gender when hearing ideas. Do our best when some people may be more timid to talk.

It is a hard problem, but as Jamelle says, we need to engage.
  • Mar 28 2011: Dialogue, dialogue and more dialogue. My organization does a lot in the area of human rights. It really requires that people be education and that requires engaging conversations.

    Mar 18 2011: Hi Trina,
    1. Love being a woman yourself and know that it is not an inferior life.
    2. Speak up and defend other women.
    3. Speak up and defend yourself.
    4. Particpate in the Vagina Monologues if you are inclined and or support a presentation. This year the money is going to support the women of Haiti who really need our help.

Mar 18 2011: Hi Frederic, Thanks for posing the question that many men might wish to ask. The answer is that all oppressed people deserve to be helped. The problem is that since women have only had 'personhood' or rights in many countries for the last 100 years (and still do not have them in many other countries that are rich and at least tacitly approved of by many governments) and since we have seen how quickly women's rights are lost for example in Afganistan, women have decided that we need to focus the attention and our priorities on women. Women have decided that all of history has not been long enough to rescue women if we wait for someone else to do so thus we are choosing to do it for ourselves. Please note that when women help women that also includes all of the children NOT just the children of one sex. Just as the World Economic Forum works to prioritize the problems on the planet to urge people to work on what they can solve best and first, women are as well. We have decided to save the men of this world by saving the women who love them, the women who give birth to them and the women who are injured by the existing systems which have no sympathy for the oppressed.
