Memory is more powerful than the experience itself. We choose what to remember. Choose wisely. Todays choices determine tomorrows happiness.

Happiness is something we control. It is not what happens to us... but how we choose to remember what happens to us. So life can continue to test and torment us... but if we choose to remember those tests as pleasant learning experiences, they create future happiness for us. We are the masters of our memories. More importantly we are the creators of our destiny.

Aug 20 2012: Perhaps we are missing what memories are. Recall comes from the senses ... looks like - reminds me of; Smells like - reminds me of; etc.... Enter the kitchen and smell baked cookies and that may remind you of grandma ... baked bread ..... Many soldiers have flash backs from stale water, musty boots, etc ...

I am suggesting that our sensory system is the igniter of these memories, this could also be called association. It is not always the conscience mind that makes the association but rather the subconscience.

    All the best. Bob.

Aug 20 2012: Good point Robert,
And if we "know" ourselves, we will know where the information is coming from....conscience, subconscience, many other levels of consciousness (instinct, intuition, collective consciousness, etc.) remembering, experiencing, this moment, or a previous memory.

We are multi-sensory beings, with the ability to sense many things at the same time, which is why folks have difficulty sometimes differenciating between the remembering self and experiencing self. Again, when we "know" ourselves, we can determine where the information is coming from. Not knowing our "self" sometimes causes frustration or confusion.

Aug 20 2012: They are certainly more in conditions like PTSD which is what Bob's comments seem to be touching upon. If you are not aware, memories can highjack functioning.
