What does the simple good mean to you?

As a society, we are rushing through life so quickly that we often forget about how connected we are to one another through the most basic and fundamental good in our world. What do you think the simple good means to you in your life?

Jul 16 2012: This would infer something that is appeasing, esthetic, soothing, and so forth to an individual or a group. We normally associate good deeds to the Boy Scouts and the Golden Rule to Religious afiliations. However they are also simple acts of kindness that generate "good" feelings or "good" will among others. The simple act of a smile and a greeting, opening a door, picking up something dropped, well you get the idea.

In my view I appreciate the "simple good" because it is not mandated or a requirement it is a voluntary act of kindness.

In simple terms ... The responders of TED are attempting to aide their fellow members through the responses given and in turn they are rewarded through the learning process. My friends Colleen and Debra offer wonderful healing and concernd advice all of the time. They are by no means simple but are definately GOOD.

    All the best. Bob.

      Jul 16 2012: Thank you Robert...sending you a smile....:>)

Your comments also offer lots of good "stuff"...sometimes simple....sometimes not so simple....always good and beneficial:>)

Jul 15 2012: Doing the simple good is simply doing the good that we can do.
It doesn't have to be grand or global in scale, but simple gestures of goodwill to those that we come in contact with on a daily basis goes a long way in solidifying the fabric that is humanty, our interconnectiveness restored by small random, perhaps unnoticed but important acts.

Jul 17 2012: Good question Priya. I think we are connected by good in the world, but titles, jobs, zip codes, politics, and upbrinings, segregate our perceptions, and makie it seem like people are vastly different than us. Honest people, and criminals for example are divided by percieved morality, but I have both types of friends, yet these people from different worlds share commonalites; caring for the people around them, and having a comfortable life. The simple good to me is supporting loved ones and friends in a time of need, its what I believe connects us all.

Jul 16 2012: Mostly it means loving and trying to understand or 'get it".

    Jul 15 2012: Hi Priya,
To me, it simply means authenticity, integrity, living life mindfully aware in each and every moment:>)

Jul 16 2012: "Mindfully aware in each and every moment" is simply good but often difficult, requires the authentic soul Colleen, much like you
      • thumb
Jul 16 2012: It is only as difficult as we perceive it to be....I think you know this dear Brian:>)

Thank you for the generous compliment, and I believe we ALL have the ability to connect with our own authenticity. It simply means to say what we mean....mean what we say...walk our talk with honesty, truth, trust, without masks and various other protective mechanisms.

We sometimes think/feel that we are protecting ourselves from hurt, pain, disappointment, frustration, etc., when in fact, we are simply protecting ourselves from knowing our "self", and from fully participating in the human life experience:>) I know you know this Brian, and I'll get off my soapbox now:>)

Jul 16 2012: Still working on being fully volunerable, some walls are hard to come down.

I know what you speak of Colleen, your genuine transparancy is plain to see :)
Yours is an open book my friend, it's why I admire you.

Jul 16 2012: Oh my goodness....many thanks for reflecting that to me:>) Yes....I am indeed an "open book"...and why not? It is much more simple to keep track of myself when my book is open:>) The alternative is to struggle all the time trying to figure out, or remember what page I'm on at any given moment!!! I open "my book" for the simple pleasure of being peaceful and calm in myself:>)

I KNOW you KNOW Brian....it is simply a matter of remembering. Ask yourself this question....what can I lose, and what is there to gain, by allowing myself to be vulnerable? My experience is that there is a LOT to gain, and really nothing to lose.

Here's another peice of information. Once we take the walls down, we can always put them back up again. We can learn how, why, when, where and with whom to use the protective mechanisms. They are still available to us, and they do not need to prevent the total exploration of the life experience...get my drift??? :>)

Jul 17 2012: An incredible example of, what the simple good may mean. A question asked, a thoughtful response engages conversation that uplifts and teaches. Lessons learned, a lot to gain that'll contribute much to the simple good.
          I do remember ............now

Jul 17 2012: I agree Brian...a good example of what " simple good" can mean.

In her introduction to this discussion, Priya offers this... "As a society, we are rushing through life so quickly that we often forget about how connected we are to one another through the most basic and fundamental good in our world".

In my perception, one of the most basic and fundamental "goods" in our world, is to be aware and fully present in the moment with those we are interacting and communicating with.
        I appreciate you Brian:>)
  • Jul 15 2012: Simple good is doing what ought to be done; and not just what is convinient and easy.

Jul 15 2012: I think we are connected to each other from the beginning. But our socio-economics have changed dramatically since the revolution of the wheel! We transformed from empires to republics. More inventions were made, more faster transportation helped us to trade and structuring the economies. We went nationals to Multi-Nationals! So we are so connected today for the survival!! Good question by the way!!

    Jul 15 2012: be original....do not act !

Jul 16 2012: The differing meanings of act caught me here: I believe we should act and not just react.
  • Jul 18 2012: The Golden Rule.
