Life after life? Whats your take?

Does life end with death? What happens then? What do you think? I believe in Jesus, in judgement day, in hell & heaven (eternal life/death). I would love to know what other people believe in!

I just want to know what TEDsters believe in, and how deeply they have thought about this topic!

Many offer various opinions... Some like Dr.Rawlings became a believer following his interactions with patients who had near death experiences!

Jul 13 2012: I believe that this life is a test for another one. I believe in the Bible and all that is written in it as far as doctrine is concerned.

For every human desire, there is an act, or thing in nature that satisfies such. But for our desire for permanence and immortality, nothing in this world satisfies it.
I believe that immortality is in the human mind, and there is a realm where this thirst will be satisfied.
    • Jul 13 2012: you mean you dont believe the entire Bible as the word of God?

Jul 13 2012: Hi Sibin, as Swedenborgians we believe only those parts (and that is by far most parts) are the Word of God which connect us, via heaven, to God.
That would for instance leave out Paul's writings. They are Pauls words, not God's. They can be useful but don't connect us to God.

This is our Doctrine of the Sacred Scripture:

    • Jul 14 2012: According to islam we are worshipping for the same god. muslims + christians + jewishes.I really wonder in christianity,is that the same? according to islam christians' the biggest problem is that you are believing jesus is son of the God.(we call him "isa"(jesus)) according to islam, God have no son, father, mother or another thing related to it."isa"-"muhammed"-"musa(jewishes' prophet)", all these are prophets. From the begining to muhammed there are 124thousand prophets.First one is Adem and the last is muhammed.I must believe and obey all of them, to be a muslim. And all of them from the same God.They were sent to world for the same purpose but with different religions. And only 4 of them were sent with a holly book. 1) "Prophet Davud with Zebur(his book) for jewishes" 2)"prophet Musa with Tevrat(Torah) for jewishes 3)"prophet Isa(jesus) with incil (bible) for christians 4) prophet Muhammed with koran for Muslims. And why the other religions were sent after the previous one? **First God sent "Adem" to world, to exam him, and all of us are coming from him even his wife "havva".All of us have individual souls you know, in fact these souls are in this exam , this is the same for Adem. And God sent us religions and prophets to help and teach how to pass this exam.(prophets are human like us they also are in this exam). (exam's main purpose is beating ego and finding and believing and obeying God) judeism were sent to people to lead them in this world but some time later they changed it, they broke its rules they started not obeying the God and God sent christianity to lead and guide them, then when the people did the same thing, God sent islam.Islam is new, recovered, corrected and fixed form of christianty. These are islam's opinions.I really wonder what does the christianty say about the other religions?teach me christianty's opinions related with these opinions.(I am ready to hear every thing, tell clearly)(I couldnt tell many details due to 2000charachter limit.)

        Jul 16 2012: Hi Omer.
"teach me christianty's opinions related with these opinions."
Christianity teaches that Jesus is Jehovah God come in the flesh. This is a lot different from a prophet as taught by the Koran. It also means that Jehovah & Allah are not the same person. Many church leaders today are saying that we have the same god, but this is not what the bible teaches. They are just trying to keep the peace.
Mohammed claimed that he was given his message by the angel Gabriel. this is what the bible says :-
        Galatians 1:8 (KJV)
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

The Koran claims to be an update of the bible. The bible claims to be the word of god. Does god need updated ? This is what the bible says :-
        Revelation 22:18 (KJV)
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
I say these things because you asked me; I do not wish to be disrespectful, but merely to answer your questions. I encourage you to tread carefully in your search, only a god who actually exists is of any help to us.

        :-)
        • Jul 16 2012: Thank you very much.
please answer also this;(just due to curiosity)
is jehovah a person?by mistake or on purpose? is it a human?
Allah isnt.It is a God.It must be much better than human.I am very very weak and simple to be able to imagine How Allah looks like.If Allah is a god, it must have many diffirences from me,so Allah cant be like a human.
is jehovah a human?can I imagine it ?please tell me much about it.I am suprised. I really wonder. Thanks for info.

        Jul 16 2012: Ho Omer.
This is quite difficult to understand. God is a spirit who created the universe. He is a person, but not a human. He took on human form to come to earth, as from Adam we have rebelled against Him. He was crucified & rose again to life, but with a body much superior to ours. He has promised that if we follow Him we will spend eternity with Him. We will also have superior bodies, necessary to live for ever.
For the Christian, God has three forms. 1) Father; Jehovah. 2) Son; Jesus. & 3) Holy Spirit. I think about it like this. Water can be liquid, solid, or gas (steam); it is all water, just in different forms. The Holy Spirit again is God. He is that aspect go God that inhabits His people. It is the Holy Spirit that teaches us spiritual truth from His word. I think that is why Atheists find it so difficult to understand.
The bible is quite clear that Jesus is God; equal with Jehovah, but it takes a bit of study. If you read the first chapter of Hebrews you will get a description of the Son (Jesus) creating the world.
        http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+1&version=KJV
Jesus also describes Himself as the Alpha & the Omega; the first & the last.
        Revelation 22:12-13 (NIV)
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. [13] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

.Father, Son & Holy Spirit are all equal, & all one God. While Christians believe we have the same God as the Jews, we do not recognise Allah at all. Again with respect to yourself, this is my faith. I may be wrong, but I must be honest with you & try & answer truthfully.

        :-)

Jul 17 2012: According to the bible, which is not particularly useful for proving claims but is a source text for future interpretations:

Did Jesus say he was the Alpha and Omega while alive? Or is this from someone else's revelation/dream.

Does Jesus actually come out and say "I am God" in the gospels?

Why didn't he explain the trinity? Does he give the ice/water/steam analogy.

Why didn't the old testament explain the trinity?

Why does the old testament messiah not equate to the Jesus is God Christian view?

          Jul 17 2012: Peter,

Of course they made it out Jesus met the OT prophecies once they decided he was the messiah whether he did or didn't. I note most Jews at the time didn't and still don't think Jesus was the messiah.

I guess it took years after Jesus died before the early Christians worked out the theology and wrote stuff down. Not all the writings are consistent. Surprising the God connection was not stronger than it is. It seems to get stronger the later the books were written. Still kind of obscure.

There are gospels that were not included that talk about Jesus being born of a man and a women but then filled with the spirit of god.

I guess those that collated the 3 new testaments centuries after did so with particular views in mind.

Jul 17 2012: Actually Omer its not the same god.

As Peter said Jesus is an aspect of God to Christians. Muslims don't think Jesus is god.

The Jews do not recognise Jesus as God or the revelations in the Koran as being from their God.

It's just evolution of the Jewish god and old testament into something else.

Just like the God in the Book of Mormon, is not the same as the Jewish, Christian and Muslim god as they don't recognise the add ons. The add ons change the picture of God.

Franking the New Testament, Koran and Book of Mormon are just add ons borrowing someone else's religious texts or stories. Try to get some legitimacy by connecting to old stories and traditions.

Even the old testament god probably evolved over time influenced by other religious traditions in the area. Yahweh may have been a tribal god Son of El, that eventually become part of a monotheistic belief system. I guess the early Hebrews believed in and worshipped other gods such as Baal etc. Historically Yahweh may have had consorts e.g. Asheron (not sure spelling).

My understanding is the Koran mentions other godlike beings in the pagan bits.

          Jul 17 2012: Hi Obey.
I hesitate to get into the bible with you as you do not respect it as a source, so it's a bit of a waste of time. Omer has respect for the bible & is trying to learn, you are trying to divert him. I doubt you will succeed, he seems determined to learn.
Jesus claimed many times to be God in one way or another. Ultimately that's why he was crucified. I don't think he ever actually said " I am God", but a little discernment will get you there. Eg
          John 14:8-9 (NIV)
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” [9] Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Most of His teaching was in parables. You need to dig just a little bit to "get it". His teachings are not for everyone. The trinity is not explained either, you have to be interested enough, & believing enough to work it out. It is hinted at at the very beginning .
          Genesis 1:26 (NIV)
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in OUR image, in OUR likeness, so that they may rule over the fish i.....”
The OT messiah is exactly Jesus, exactly to the letter as prophecied.
You may not see it Obey, but Omer might.
          Matthew 13:13-15 (NIV)
This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. [14] In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “ ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. [15] For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
