What is the source of intuition?

My intuition has never failed me. I have recognized a intuition after a event and I have ignored it and 'paid the price'. Is intuition an advanced human capacity that we have yet to harness? Is it a mental process based on retained experience and associated probabilities? Or, do we process an event and enlist our creative mind to imagine and convince ourselves we were aware prior? Your thoughts

Jul 14 2012: One question: "Is it true that your intuition has never failed you. For instance, have you never been disappointed by someone whom you trusted? Or decided on an investment, job, marriage or other relationship with high hopes and a good gut feeling, only to have it eventually fly south?"

My experience is that we remember success more readily than we do failure, and rationalize away the failure. If a person who I trusted lets me down, I can always switch my rationalization to match the facts.

You may want to look at the book "Everything is Obvious (Once you know the answer)" by Duncan Watts. The author has a PhD in mathematical sociology, and the book is a fascinating look at how we warp what we "knew" based on the outcome.

Jul 14 2012: It is true, for me at least. Of course, not all disappointments are without fond memories and experiences. So in those cases, my intuition was right but I gained from ignoring it. You just busted my position, to always follow my instinct LOL
