Cien Anos de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude) is also a great book I have reread a bunch of times. A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare is a really beautiful book, as well as The Odyssey and The Iliad by Homer.

It would also have to be all the scientists, civil rights activist, and innovators of the past, present, and future that takes credit for making these "Revolutions". I hope that ted.com is a place where everyone can find their own calling and revolutionalize a small part of the world because talk can be cheap without action backing it up.

So the problem is in how to seek it. Mostly people opt for meditation as a medium and tend to study several techniques and follow gurus but my personal experience tells me that such attempts can only have a short term effect. To become conscious we need to find inner peace. For some even inner peace can come naturally. We need to travel within our thoughts as a sage wanders around the world. We need to become a great observer and listener. We might have to unlearn and relearn a great deal, we must be ready for this. We have to loose a lot specially our ego, attitude and even break down our self image to really make this happen. Being said all this how many of us are really ready to walk this direction less path.

Jul 13 2012: If we saw things as bacteria an aspect of life that will always be a part of us for it is us, constantly evolving and reshaping beneath our noses. A duplication and growth that never stops, then maybe we can become more willing to accept things that aren't definite. Embrace all that is different in life because essentially it is all the same. Everything is united and like bacteria everything is growing in a familiar speed in need of another. I guess its a metaphor for life. we are all the same. we all solve together. We adapt we grow and perhaps we will all love. Then we can all enjoy life for everything it offers, by not limiting ourselves to only what we know or what we feel comfortable with. By not limiting ourselves with being racist or prejudice, and by not limiting our humanity stripping it from its dignity by separating ourselves through our differences. we are all bacteria in a beautiful mass of soil, so let us grow together instead of setting each other apart. Seeing growth is inevitable, so lets make it positive for a richer life and grow together like the bacteria we are. Our lives are full with a type of certainty. It's one that we tend to create that isn't attributed to personality, moreover it has to with humanity's evolvement. Our brain reduces everyday symbols to basic signs we can relate and compare to, in order to understand it in a direct approach. It causes us to have limited perspectives, leading us to a one sided life style. Therefore its time to modify the way humanity evolves. Abstain from a society that isn't open to new things, to change, or understand ideas that we don't necessarily agree with. It is understandable to be uncomfortable with the unknown for it threatens to shake up our stability. but we must move forward to a better tomorrow where one simply enjoys life without our personal restrictions.
Remember that we are bacteria, together like corresponding parts in the scheme to understand our existence.

Jul 11 2012: Adrian, I have noticed that angels are a big part of your theology. Do you have a primary source or reference for this belief? Please understand this as a very sincere belief because I have almost no recollectin of this assertion in regular religious texts.
      • Jul 11 2012: Debra, you're absolutely right (about 'my' theology). And any questions regarding it are much appreciated.
The usual religious notion is that angels were created separate from us humans, but I have no idea what that is based on. We do, however, believe that the position of angels is certainly higher than our position as humans, but should be seen as our goal. We are here to become angels.
One thing that comes to mind is a situation in the OT where someone realizes he just met an angel and wants to pray to that angel. At which point the angel stops him and says, I am one like you, do not pray to me but only to God.

Our theology is based on the OT, the NT and the Writings by (or through) Emanuel Swedenborg. Those writings we see as the promised Second Coming. It opens the spiritual level of the Bible, so there are no more contradictions or mysteries.
The most popular book of the Writings is Heaven and Hell. If you do want any answers about angels (or devils).. that's the place to go.

  • Jul 18 2012: Darina and Debra, thank you for your comments.
Darina.. I think it can be better right now..
to start lightly, like the beginning of the Six Million Dollar Man"..."We have the technology, we can make it better, faster, kinder ...etc."
It doesn't have to be this way is behind everything I do or create.
Much of what we do repeatedly is from tradition.. what used to be the best that could be done at the time.. so it was commendable.. but we humans fear change..so we stay with traditional ways..
the new best ways are being discovered.. and will be many times over.. these will be the traditions in the future..
I have so much to say on the topic.. It hurts to see tragedies that could have been prevented.. and should never have been... fixing a tragedy is heroic, preventing them is better. and more heroic.. if you want I will elaborate more. This is off the top of my head.. I will post more in a bit. I loved this Tedtalk.
  • Jul 18 2012: Hello Darina,
The answer of what brings me joy these days is communicating with the TED community. Here is one more 6 word idea for you.
" Foresight is priceless, Hindsight is worthless"
Once again Thank you and Thank you for the compliment :-)
  • Jul 17 2012: I think that every person must strive to be more than they are. Our minds must stay open and ready to accept new ideas and keep learning. The more we do, the better off we are and the more we can help ourselves and others. It all starts with each of us making a decision to make tomorrow better than today. Everyday life has a way of getting between who we are and who we strive to be. We have to set goals to improve ourselves. It starts with making tomorrow better than today.
I would have said more before, but I only had six words :)

Jul 15 2012: Donating money to charity for free

What if people could donate to charity without having to lose a penny of their own?
In this day in age people are holding onto their money more than they have done in the past few decades and so (like everyone else) charities are finding it harder to convince us to hand over our money. My Idea takes this situation that we are all in and turns it into a win win for everybody.

We have survey websites out there that say they will give us money for a few minutes of our time to fill out a form, some will give us money and some won’t. Most people believe that it sounds too good to be true and so never try it, you can't really blame them. But what if there is a survey website that tells you that you’re not going to get any money and instead it's going to go to charity? Will you be more inclined to fill out a form knowing that the financial incentive has been replaced with a feel good one instead and therefore probably not going to be scam?

Companies would first pay the website to host the marketing forms; users fill out the forms and earn a number of points depending on the type of form. The user would then allocate the points to the charities they feel strongly for and the money from the companies would then get divided up to the various charities based on how many points they have received from users. A leader board and achievements would encourage competition among users and provide growth.

To recap, Businesses get more accurate research from larger numbers filling out forms, charities get more money and people get to donate without losing a penny of their own.

I plan to make a move on this in the next few years but right now I’m still a student and don’t have the finances to start a project like this. This is a short description of my idea that I want to give the world.

Jul 17 2012: Barry, what are the best ways to 'learn wisdom' in our 'info rich' but often 'wisdom poor' societies?
      • Jul 18 2012: Darina,

OK, YOU are asking ME how to learn wisdom?

I certainly would not presume to have anything to teach you in this regard, but I will tell you how I might approach this task.

First, I would look up wisdom in the dictionary to make sure I understand what I am trying to do. The definition I would choose to pursue is 'good judgment' which I take to mean good decision making. This involves specific skills which can be learned, like predicting consequences and making sure you know all of the available options. The other definitions of wisdom all lead in the direction of accumulating knowledge and information.

Second, I would google 'learning wisdom' and get 94,900,000 results and check out some the sites that look promising.

Third, I would get on the phone and call the wisest person I know, my mother, and ask her how to learn wisdom. Then I would follow her advice.

Fourth, I would develop the skills needed for good decisions.

Also, I would find many examples of good judgment and bad judgment. I would try to stay informed, from many different sources, especially those that I generally disagree with. I would seek out failures. All human knowledge about 'how to do something' is based on trial and error. Failures teach us how to succeed even better than successes.

I expect that I am missing something here, but Mom would set me straight.

Topology is the engine of life.
    • thumb
Jul 24 2012: NOW we want/need/would like to know more! Will you share more about topology Mitch?
      • thumb
Jul 24 2012: Ah yes - topology defines the paths of all energy conversions.

It is life that defies entropy. It is the topology of life that channels energy flows in ever-increasing complexity to regain what entropy would disperse.

It is topology that enables living systems to convert energy into more living systems. From the shapes defined by DNA to the blood vesels that transport potential energy to cells to the branches of trees increasing surface area to capture more light to the very dynamic of a nervous system giving life to the metaverse - all convergence and distribution feeding off the energy made and lost through entropy, each finding new levels of reality in which to evolve.

And yet, entropy will ultimately have its way - and it must, the halt of entropy is the halt of all. Some radiation will go to space, if it all goes to space, everything stops in thermal death, if it is captured 100% everything also stops.

Topology is the thing that tells energy what to do. LIfe is topology.

There is good karma here Darina
  • Jul 18 2012: Before the legal side is introduced (and it is also necessary) it is a matter of ethics and the need for a majority of the country to want to enjoy the assocaited social justice. Most countries have a small number of land owners who are monopolists and aparently they are bitterely opposed to sharing the opportunities that the ownership of their land bequithes!

So to implement this idea the first stage is a realization of how much harm land value speculation (monopolisation) does and then to gradually introduce the new tax regime. Part of this process is the assessment of the values of all land sites and the public display of this information, so that everyone can see where the valuable land is and who should be paying the tax. There is far more to say on this subject than it first appears. Please look up Henry George who first explained LVT in his seminal book "Progress and Poverty" of 1879. It sold 3 million copies to date! Also see: http://www.progress.org

Jul 25 2012: I appreciate your observation of the energy required for a human to stand still.
But the observation applies only to the end result of very complex factors.
What you are talking about is dynamic balance, not stillness.

I appreciate that Isaac Newton's laws of thermodynamics are not proven to be absolute, and yet, much practical result has come from them.
In this case "A body at rest wishes to remain at rest" means that any object posessing mass requires energy to be changed from a state of stillness. But you are asserting the opposite.
Similarly, if you equate silence with the absence of sound, then, once again - sound is an expression of energy - sound requires energy, absolute silence requires nil energy.

Can you explain the process by which you assert the opposite of accepted physical principles? I accept that without this framework, I cannot quite understand what you have said.
  • Jul 18 2012: Sure :) If you don't buy it, they won't sell it...
But the thing is... we (the mass) buy it anyways!!

Mainly, I think, because of 2 factors : advertisement and lack of consumer education.

I'd like to work on the second one and build a collaborative tool that would give the consumer objective, instant and easy-to-understand information on the product he is likely to buy.

But it's only a project (for now)... :)

There are already a number of standard and third-party portlets available for Liferay, as well. It's a sort of web service and user interface framework with - I'd say - quite a mature architecture.

Then there's the example demonstrated of Cohere, sort of a topic map management platform - http://cohere.open.ac.uk - also a free/open-source software product.

Somewhere in the lower-level concepts, there's the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and the OWL API for Java. I think that it could be integrated into Liferay's existing knowledge management framework, along with some other existing work - such as Apache Stanbol and Maui Indexer, for instance - and something for making neat graphs with, maybe the D3 JavaScript library, or something in Google Web Toolkit.

Lately, though, I've begun to pursue a bit of a sidebar of a kind, in studying the Common Lisp programming language, again, and specifically, a Java application known as ABCL, a sort of bridge between Common Lisp and Java. I've always found Common Lisp more fun to write code in, honestly. I only hope that my brief digression about it may ultimately serve to contribute back to that knowledge management model.

I can share a bibliography, as well, if anyone would request - I'd managed to find some intriguing whitepapers about Knowledge Management, via Google Scholar. It's for that that I know I cannot claim ownership to concepts of personal knowledge management. I only hope that I'll be able to contribute some useful ideas for it, in time. Cheers, and thank you for your interest!

Why Tax Land Values? – The Theory of Land Value

As a new community grows from a few pioneers, the use of land and other natural resources is limited by the territorial claims of its occupants as well as the poor means for access to its bounty and the slow external communications. The government slowly invests tax-payers’ money in various local and national infra-structures and the benefits from these improvements to the surroundings, gradually raise the living-standards of the local population, allowing it to be more active economically.

However, this enhanced productivity of the land is not returned to the community as a dividend on its public investment. Instead, this advantage is taken by the few ex-pioneers who soon become wealthy land-owners and whose monetary gain is in the form of a potential or actual ground-rent, (which is the true measure of the land value). The ground-rent on urban sites becomes progressively greater with the more central locations, having been intensely developed in mid-town due to the high-density of the population, competition for the best locations and their high potential for productivity.

Speculation in land values often results in some choice sites being unused, which wastes their potential and causes keener competition for the rest. As a result production costs rise unreasonably. This limits and strains the functioning of the social system The relatively few land owners and their production-managers also control the opportunities of the landless majority of workers to earn, whose labour needs access to the land and to its improvements.

These two social injustices should be rectified by the introduction of land value taxation (LVT) instead of the main tax burden being placed on the earnings, goods-sales and ownership of built-up property.

Jul 17 2012: Alan, great one - how do you envision that happening?
      • Jul 18 2012: Hi Darina

The first one I came up with has more coverage but is a little more vague:

"Humans learn to transcend their genes"

I'm more concerned with our genetic built-ins for thinking than for disease, aging, etc., so I went with the one above.

Bertrand Russell would ask "How much of human nature can be tempered by human nurture?"

We can think of "training" as processes that help the acquisition of knowledge, and "Education" as processes that help the acquisition of new perspectives and contexts.

It would be difficult to explain to the 100 million or so killed by other humans in 20th century wars and oppression that "things are better now", but overall, things do seem to be better on a number of fronts than compared to 500 and 1000 years ago.

The two large questions are: (a) can we learn our way to further deeply qualitative changes in our behaviors which are not subject to the passions of the moment? (b) if so, then what processes over what duration must be set up to effect the gradual transformation?

It is worth being optimistic about (a), and thus we need to put in much more time and effort in on (b). The tragedy could be that (a) is possible, but that we lack the will and perspective to do what is needed in (b).

For example, what if consumer economics and marketing coupled with modern media were to be shown as deep barriers to real changes for the better?

        Best wishes,

        Alan

    • Jul 15 2012: Dear Rohit Sharma,

Forgive my presumption of thinking your comment was addressed to me. That said, here goes:
The best big idea I know to save the world (or, Maximize the survival of humanity thru time.) must fit these parameters:
      1. simple
      2. costs nothing
      3. takes 5 minutes or less to learn
A proposed change to the calendar I heard about fits these guidelines:
A paleobiologist recommended adding 4B+ to our calendar, to reflect the age of the Earth. B stands for billion, and 4 billion years is aproximately the age of the world.
His calendar would read 4B+2012 this year.
He mentioned this could help people reconcile geologic time and human historic time.
This could also help reconcile science (4B+) and religious (2012) perceptions.
Also, relativity states that spacetime needs at least two points - or in this case times - to measure anything. This calendar offers that crucial second measure.Using this system, people can think and plan for truely long term goals. Even for the year 4B+4B!
If you find this idea useful, please propagate it. Thanks.

  • Jul 13 2012: :) yes the simple, the every day - seeing each person as valuable, living lives together, from providing at least two weeks of meals for friends with precious new baby, "a meal is best enjoyed when shared" my Kenyan friends' approach to food (!), two other families in my community adopting children who had no (to negligible) 'start' or 'prospects' in life. The heart to love and provide home for all their children, even when their resources were limited prior to adopting. Our community edges are blurred and ever-expanding - understanding we are created to be part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Most challenging and fundamentally transforming - Regularly visiting friends associated with an educare centre, friends whose home language is different, whose lives bear no comparison to the one I live in many ways. We gather 'resources': food for the feeding scheme, paint for the walls, seeds for the veggie garden...the resource flow might seem one-directional, the gifts are multi-directional! We now know we have community in Khayelitsha, friends who have chosen to share their lives with us, and freely give what they have available, meals at celebrations at the educare, music and dance in exuberant abundance, and lessons in Xhosa, 'help' the click sounds!

Joyful diversity in people - backgrounds, languages, gifting, perspective - no-one should promise it's easy; is life in abundance possible without such community?

  • Jul 13 2012: Sure thing! I´m a fairly young student and I couldn´t possibly say that i have figured out a way to reach this goal, but seeing this exponential growth in technology and innovation that we´re are currently undergoing I love nothing more than to dream of one day being able to chip in my very own ideas towards a better world all together for our species. Biology has gotten us very far, the human brain has evolved from inside out over the years and grown new sectors with brand-new functions which evolved our thinking and imagination. However, we are still somewhat dominated by animalistic instincts such as aggression and competition towards our neighbors and fellow beings. I belive these animalistic features were key to evolving us from a primitive species but they also make the world a very uncomfortable place to live in as people have this tendency to step on each other to get what they want. If i could wish for anything i think it would be to wake up every morning in complete ecstasy, with nothing but positive feelings and happiness to be part of this cosmic dynamic mess that is our planet. If we as humans managed to tinker with our faulty features, we may be able to reach a level of love for one another that will make the idea of immortality much more appealing to people. We deserve to be in ecstasy. Happiness shouldn´t be just a phase and no one deserves to suffer in my opinion

"Man finds himself in quite the predicament. He has the mental capacity to ponder the infinite, seemingly capable of anything, yet housed in a heart-pumping, breath-gasping, decaying body…we are godly, yet creaturely.” Ernest Becker

Jul 12 2012: James, sounds intriguing , can you give us an example?
      • Jul 13 2012: Yes. An example would be to take journalism in the direction of covering "progress" separately from "news" in a new periodical--but also changing the very nature and mechanism of what periodicals can do. The concept of "news" has been the dominant journalism construct for centuries. But the medium itself has now changed and journalism has not changed with it to the degree that it can. It has instead moved into the newer medium with all of the compromises of commercialism, sensationalism and linearity still in place. A new direction would be to create a product that takes full advantage of non-linearity to sort the arts and sciences in application differently so that a journalism product can define a new modernity. I see that one must truly reverse from the model of "one-to-many" which has defined the commercial/sensationalist model to the highest order of "one-to-one" in which no compromise to commercial intrusion is made. This fundamentally means expecting a tiny audience to grow rather than capturing a mass market over-night. A way to do that is to do something that no one has done before in a way that illuminates what will happen as a result of this new model being applied over time so that it gets validation from the best theorists and "makes news" too.

My idea is to cede "news" to the existing media establishment and instead map only "movement" and "progress". Obviously you can't journalize all movement and progress everywhere, and just arbitrarily choosing what I think is interesting to cover in a publication cycle would make me not much different than an editor for a commercial periodical interested only in creating my own sensations. I therefore have a vision of picking one theater of human endeavor which has had no medium but represents movement and progress which is relevant globally. "News" just drops stories and moves on. My direction creates anticipation and ability to affect outcome. I see this as a center-piece for a new motivational education model.

Jul 12 2012: Small amounts (relatively) are being invested, however today these investments are not really for energy it is for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, foods, feeds, fertilizers, chemicals, plastics, remediation and energy. This progress is the key to sustainability and the recycling of pseudo non-renewables, energy today is a low value bi-product of some of these efforts. Several algal companies are profitable, others are in early stage. We am close to the action in this field because of technologies we have created, and are utilizing. Our algal based company (Algaeventure Systems, Inc ‘08) is pivoting into pharmaceuticals (Biosortia Pharmaceuticals is initially pursuing anti-cancer compounds).

The algal technology world and the products from this space will be growth industry for over 100 years (think of cars, electricity, or farming as growth models worldwide) ultimately becoming a massive industry like agriculture - because it is agriculture. It is agriculture at >20x productivity with higher degree of sustainability and bi-products that include clean air (O2), clean water, and the biomass product. In time growing and using algae will be as easy as farming (learning curve). Algae will ultimately allow us to sustain life on this planet and permit human extraterrestrial adventures. Algae already provides about 75% of the annual production of oxygen on earth. One other important consideration is that algae produces and recycles as much biomass in about 62 days as is produced by the terrestrial environment in 14 years. Algae will be to an advancing civilization what fire was to the stone age. Algal technologies will be what allows our civilization to make it tens or hundreds of thousands of years into the future with clean air, clean water, and permit complete sustainability. If civilization does not make it than algae will clean up our mess in blink of the eye, no matter what kind of mess we leave. It is Algae, one way or another. Ross Youngs
