Nowadays, people load their computers with tons of unnecessary programs. What software set you consider to be a necessary minimum?

Jul 7 2012: As Bharath stated it is the requirement of the end user. There are no must-haves. A ten year old car can get you from point A to point B just as well as a new and expensive car can. Everything after that are bells and whistles. Software makers sell you a bill of goods and the idea that you cannot live without it.

Here is a test. Go without something you consider essential for a week. Even if you don't go without mark the "essential" calls from the didn't make a difference calls on your cell phones. If you do not use your computer for work shut it off for a week.

Seperate the wants from the needs. Stop buying into the sales pitch.

    All thhe best. Bob,.

Jul 6 2012: Actually it is a relative question , the classification again goes on the requirements of End User. What we need to look out for are scalable systems that can manage the present and future softwares which we install in our systems.

    Hope it helps

Jul 6 2012: not a list, but something i think few people will mention, though it is vital

    it is TrueCrypt

get used to it. the question is not that "do i need to protect this data", but rather "do i need this data to be published". if questionable, protect it.
