How to make a profit on open source intelectual property?

I loved the Cesar Harada talk, he mentionned that he believes that it is important to make a profit to advance technology but he allso believes that ideas should be created trough an open souced platform developped with the knowledge of people.

For an entreprenuer, profit is what he/she makes for coming up with the idea, and taking the risk to bring that product to fruition.

So even if ideas were open sourced, I still think it takes a special sorta person to bring that product to reality, to market it, to sell it, etc and this is what profit will be based on.
