Who is a person that you respect and/or look up to that you are not related to? Why?

I'm curious as to who people look up to and why they value what that person has given them. I try not to stay away from saying hero because as a fireman and a soldier I am of the opinion that a hero is only those who gave the ultimate sacrifice or saved someone's life. Though the latter is something that can waver from scenario to scenario.

    Jul 5 2012: For me this is a rather easy one. One of the people that I respect most and look up to is my youth pastor. He is a great role model, but I don't think that is why I respect him so much. I respect him because he is so involved in my life. He has been there for and has helped me through many different things that I have faced. The fact that we know each other personally makes me respect him. More than that though, he doesn't pretend to be perfect. I know some of his mistakes and that makes him relatable. I am very glad that I know him. The personal factor really makes a difference.

    Jul 4 2012: Every teacher that ever made me think I could become a lion in an educational system that tries to turn everyone into sheep. There were only a few, but those few men and women grew gray and bent resisting the institutionalized regression to the mean, and I have to admire their stubborn, hopeful rebellion.

    Jul 4 2012: It is my opinion that there are 10% of the people in each community that are involved in 90% of all activities of that community. Those 10% will be volunteers at church events, school activities, community clean ups, holiday organizers, and on and on ..... These people are the "DOERS" and have the courage of their convictions. They never seek the lime light or seldom are recognized for their actions but can be counted upon to do the yeoman tasks that make these event successful.

    To these people I doff my chapeau.

    Jul 4 2012: I have said this in responses several times so I hope it is not too redundant" I admire every average person who does what is right when they are under pressure. This is the hope for humanity in my estimimation.

    Jul 3 2012: I respect people who stand up for their believes which I share (at times even those I don't). I respect honest people. I respect people who care about others. I respect people who contributed positively to the knowledge, art and peace of mankind.

    Jul 3 2012: I look up to Dr. Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking and Brian Cox. All of them are the greatest inspirations for me to pursue a masters degree in physics and have endless curiosity about how the universe works.
