Jun 1 2012: Pursue subjects in which you are interested and that connect in a clear way to your life. If you are studying something you did not choose to study but rather were assigned at school, ask yourself how the work might connect to something that does interest you. You will very often be able to find a connection.

This involves more of your brain so learning is more effective and the variety stops it getting boring. I teach science so I'll give science examples. In class we read books and watch documentaries and do experiments but we also sing songs and make up games. We read through notes in silly voices because it creates interest and is more memorable.

Jun 2 2012: It is all about application, if it can't be applied it is not worth knowing. Application is where the rubber meets the road. The real test, the acid test is if you know something you can apply it if you only have an "academic" understanding of something you cannot apply it. This is not a subtle point but a VITAL point about learning.

Jun 1 2012: Hypothesise about subjects yourself and attempt to answer tough questions using your own intuitions. Then afterwards, see if your hypotheses match up with what is already known.

When you get even a part of it right, the feeling of euphoria is palpable, and affirms that you are then capable of solving new problems in the future.

Don't worry if you get things wrong - that's valuable too!

    Jun 1 2012: Hi Katerina,
Sorry, but if you get bored with a subject - it's perhaps not for you. You may be more practical or artistic.

The above is true unless you're not getting enough sleep - not eating or drinking enough (water that is!) or your teacher is uninspiring! My history lecturer was sooooooooooo boring he put me off history for 20 years! Now I read lots of history books just for pleasure and love them. Feyisayo's correct - know yourself!

Jun 1 2012: Cultivate and reward your own appropriate curiosity. (By appropriate I mean being curious about other people's lives is not positive unless you are their mother and even then it must give way to their adulthood)
