Should distance play a role in relationships?

I am going off to college here in the next couple of months and I will be leaving some of the most important people in my life behind. While I leave some behind, others are leaving me and moving across the country. These are people that I want to have relationships with for a long period of time. How am I suppose to balance school work, making new friends and then keeping old relationships bright?

    May 29 2012: Lauren, All relationships have a basis. Some are based on trusts, mutual likes / dislikes, shared experiences, common core values, etc .... These normally do not change and memories inspire strong bonds. However, you must acept that some people grow and some stagnitate. Your circle will expand and shrink over the years. Distance is not the major factor involved, i believe it to be maturing, growth, and evolving needs and desires. I remember a bible quote, "Yesterday I thought as a child and acted as a child, today I see more fully...."

    Cherish the memories and make new and more exciting memories in your journey through life.

    I think it will be a great experience to you, to broaden your mind and life perspective. I do not think distance plays a role in relationship, however you will see how much you love them and need in your life.
    Anyhow, even if you are going to other part of the world, you can always be in touch with them via Internet.

    May 28 2012: If the relationship is troubled, contentious, unsatisfying and mutually disheartening then distance should definitely play a role, the more distance the better.

    May 28 2012: Hi Lauren, you have a computer so... that's what Skype is all about :)

    Distance is a temporary set-back but don't give up your opportunities for growth just to be close to someone.
    Relationships are all about communication, whatever the distance, just take the time (and realize the time change :) ).

    May 28 2012: I think it depends on the value you place on your relationships. There are people in your life who have so far shown understanding and care, they have been instrumental to your educational and personal advancement. You might not be able to keep in touch with all of them; but some are just worth keeping in touch with.
    You will also meet new friends and acquintances in college. I will advice that you maintain contact with your most treasured people, your family,friends,and acquintances(via emails,phone calls etc); then open yourself to more inspiring, passionate and visionary personalities.
    It does not mean that you have to call or mail frequently. Your friends would also be busy,or understanding. Keep them in mind and ask about their progress from time to time.
    Life and living is about inter-personal relationships and peronal fufillment. As the African saying goes 'one tree can not make a forest', so keep the main thing as the main thing.

    In my opinion, distance shouldn't be allowed a role. There are so many advances in communications, that the world is getting smaller and smaller. Especially concerning matters of the heart, when nothing should be in your way, a few hundred miles matters not. Keep trusting the person and loving the person. You two will be just fine. He's a lucky man, to have a woman concerned enough to ask this publicly.
