Synchronize clocks amongst different stock markets

Instead of building these trading platforms in the middle of the ocean, or a fiber optic line between NY and Chicago, could we not synchronize clocks exactly to one another in order to save us from having to all compete in this unnecessary way? I realize there is a honesty factor involved but that can be solved by a regulated trusted third party that is responsible for ensuring the time is exact.
Am I wrong?

May 27 2012: The issue is not in the missing clock synchronization. The issue is with the speed of transmitting the information, which is (now) limited to the speed of light. If ansible devices will be available this issue may be solved. Or not.
