Is greater economic equality only possible in homogenous countries?

Looking at the data the Richard Wilkinson presents, it seeings that countries with the greatest economic equality are homogenous countries as is the case with Japan or the Scandinavian countries.

However, the other nations with high inequality are homogenous, other than Singapore. Portugal is the third most unequal, but it is extremely homogenous- more homogenous than Sweden. Also, the late USSR was about as diverse as the USA, but the USSR was highly egalitarian.
