why don't the american people focus money on building community greenhouses? shelters? and other community necessities owned/run by people?

if the american people focused on saving more money instead of just earning more money, would it help the economy?
what if it's saving money by growing/raising our own food again?
solar panels on residences?
purify your own water?
people owning life's necessities again?

Apr 24 2012: Or grow your own vegetables.

What good is a market that is prone to unexpected delays, international fear on oil prices, war, free trade agreement restrictions.Grow it at home or in a bucket and that will alleviate the stress of getting to the market for the basics, the small startup doesn't equate to a years worth of wages.

Apr 24 2012: there are many questions here.

saving is the engine of progress. if you consume all you produce, there will be no more capital goods, and thus tomorrow will be the same as today. if you want a better tomorrow, you need to redirect some of your work to capital formation. that is saving (more work than consumption).

growing your own food or otherwise serving yourself is not economical. it is more wasteful, since you don't have comparative advantage in food production for example. large mechanized farms can produce food much cheaper than you can. division of labor is a great tool. the most economical arrangement is everyone does only one thing, and gets everything else from the market. this maximizes output.
