What is the most important goal for humanity to pursue?

Regina asks each person to take action in pursuit of an important goal. If you had to pick one important goal on which to focus your efforts above all other goals, which goal would you pick? Would you choose to solve world hunger, poverty, end war, cure cancer, develop fusion, interstellar flight, something else entirely? Why?

Apr 30 2012: energy. i think that what has allowed us to dramatically improve our life conditions under any point of view is the possibility of exploiting energy sources. energy is the key to achieve material wellness because it feeds machines who work in our place allowing us to use our time to study and organize a complex society like the one we're living in. without industrial revolution we would still be farming (60 % of us, where in an 1st world country 5% is enough). even civil rights come from there. through machines we create richness that can be distributed to improve life conditions of everyone. though richness doesn't distribute herself alone, you need a cultural and political battle for that, and for a massive cultural and political change you need massive education (impossible if people must spend time to survive by working). the better and the higher is education (for better i mean pursuing objective truth, the fixing of real problems, inclusion, mutual respect and open-mindness), the better life quality will be, because it will also fight prejudice and commonplaces (both derive from ignorance). it's just a matter of time. of course finding a way to create as much as clean energy possible is just a material condition, but it will give us the means to accomplish the remaining part: an harmonious society, one world one nation. i believe we can achieve this within the next century or two.

Apr 30 2012: The one and only goal for us humans, I believe, is to become an angel. Since that is what we have been created for, that should be our first goal.

To learn that we have to accept a learning process that we see as useful and good, with guiding information we see as applicable and truthful.

The process should teach and coach us toward loving God and loving the good in anyone we meet.

Personally I believe we should find the best description of God we can possibly find and then determine how well we fit in with that description (since we were created in His image and likeness (but in potential)).

Fitting in with that description cannot be done by sitting around and doing nothing. The only way to fit in is to (sometimes force ourselves) to express our love toward the neighbour in actions and deeds.

The result will be a better world.

Nothing from us will make God more omniscient, omnipresent or more infinite. However, the more people there are who decide to become an angel, the more angels He can love and make happy in heaven.

    So, get to work :)

May 15 2012: We know our parents before we know ourselves.
We often have to try out a sport before we can know how we would react. Then we have to learn more about the sport to find out what position we'd like to play.

The point of knowing God first is to see what we have to do to fit into His world, according to His advice and guidance.

  • Apr 22 2012: Create civilization.

Humans are not yet civilized and we haven't created a civilization yet.
We kill, ruin, invade, acquire, destroy, enslave, impoverish, create inequality and keep it alive, war, profit on death, disease and destruction, eliminate species, and all the "good things" we have done still don't qualify as civilization.

If you think they do, you're lying to yourself.
"Knowing God" does nothing. It's behavior.

The only moral nature in life is how we treat each other, not what we know.
Why oh why do we still fear things like "human rights"?
    Because we are not civilized.
  • Apr 20 2012: Quality of life - both on a personal and community level around the world where that gift and our effort to live well reflects in the well being of space ship Earth including those we bring aboard.

Apr 21 2012: Dan, quality of life is a pretty broad umbrella. You could make the case that 1/2 the TED topics are part of quality of life. What particular aspect would you focus on?
      • Apr 22 2012: Hi Eugene -- sorry for the delay, I went flyfishing.

Quality of life covers a variety of different aspects of our lives from lifestyle to products we buy at the market. It includes self sufficiency to satisfy meeting these basic needs and wants along with the choices we enjoy from shopping to expressing our views. These things can be and are in jeopardy by what is happening around us. We are in the middle of an expanding world population that affects so many things from supply and demand to growing nationalism. Nationalism is being expressed in our defense budget and increasingly esoteric activities. That in turn is justified by protecting our self interests on the world stage. This all makes sense which makes it all the more disconcerting.

The reason quality of life was my pick is because I see the stresses from current population numbers and the ballooning growth of these numbers as problematic in maintaing the quality of life so many of us have come to expect, what ever that may include.

You might say, I see quanity consuming the quality in our lives. That's why pursuing quality of life is a noble goal for humanity.

      To learn to love

      Survival

What could it possibly be , the main missing point ?
And now i have it : to know God one must practice knowing God .

I don't know the main point , sometimes I feel it , but if to know God means to be in agreement with this all rant said (by the way every enough experienced kid would say the same thing : learn to love, truth....) then God do not exist . It must be something more out there .

Apr 18 2012: The technical problems are easy to solve if humanity works together. That sort of cooperation is not possible in a socio-economic environment that promotes competition and rewards economic activity, rather than progress. • Apr 18 2012: I think the most important goal for humanity at any time in history or future is to pursue knowledge and education its population.

Scientifically and ethically based education with subjects from history, arts, social studies etc. will allow human kind to solve all issues that you list and much more.
    • thumb
Apr 18 2012: Playing devil's advocate... who decides what is ethical? What happens to those who want to teach something that is deemed unethical?
      • Apr 18 2012: That's a good question.

While there are many complex ethical issues that border on being philosophical, many basic ethical principles are part of United Nations declaration of human rights that seem to be universally agreed on (not necessary in use in all countries) such as equality, freedom of speech etc.

In developed society, it is typically either politicians or more likely judicial system that determines and continuously improves laws that governs human rights.

Education then feeds from these laws and laws are improved by continuous increase of education of people (judges) based on our better understanding of what and why some things are morally right or wrong without any political, religious or cultural context.

In terms of unethical teachings, it depends what exactly is being taught but generally it would be private matter like certain religious teachings unless someone is seriously affected?
  • Apr 17 2012: Lovely Francesco Amati. Self discovery - self enquiry and relentless questioning of what we believe to 'be'. To unearth that which we truly are, to throw off the socially conditioned roles we have blindly adopted and cling to in an effort to be 'someone', for in that very act we deny ourselves our true existence. Walking this path leads to the discovery of many truths that once unveiled, can never be again hidden. A humanity that understands itself, that see's beyond illusion, will act with compassion and love creating a global community.

Apr 17 2012: I believe the most important goal for the human race is to realize who and what we are at the core of our existence. As I've said before, we are not 'human beings', but, rather, 'beings' being 'human'. We are united, universally, as a consciousness that exists in all of existence. Fear, pain, death, greed, hate, division, negativity, etc. is all an illusion of reality. We, the 'beings' that reside within the vessel we call the 'human', are infinite, just as the universe is.

Once we are finally aware of that, we will be a civilization with less thought and more action based on less thinking and more knowing. When we remember what it truly means to live, life will be fulfilled. We can probably start by eliminating money. This would start a social-economic revolution, but, like the ever-changing weather - it, too, will pass, and Earth will also be at peace.

The ultimate goal is progression of intelligence and survival on a universal scale.

Apr 18 2012: But that's the key question: exactly what should be on that crucial list?

    Apr 17 2012: Hi Eugene

Individually we are not that powerful to solve collective's problems, but collectively we will be able to solve not only individual's problem but humanities' as well.

I think I wouldn't go for an end-war goal... I will tell you why.
there is a negative energy in that goal. plus, one man can't stop a war.
Remember what Mother Theresa said: "I will never attend an anti-war rally, but if you have a peace rally, invite me"

hungry people are capable of doing anything. first they might think of food.
Poverty is a created condition. we are responsible for this.

Not to go into details, I think I will go for a better education.
because it is the mirror of our society.

    think about this:
everyone wants to leave a better world to our children,
but hardly anyone wants to leave better children for the world.
