Having a TED event on slums

Poverty is a very serious problem, if not the worst. My idea is to organize people with passionate ideas on how to alleviate poverty.

    Mar 26 2012: Dear Aries,

there have already been several TEDx Events held in Kibera, Nairobi. You could check the TEDx platform for similar events and get in touch with the organizers.

  • Mar 25 2012: Aries: Your idea immediately brought Michael Pritchard to mind. Mr. Pritchard designed a method of transforming dirty water into drinkable water, and presented a TED Talk entitled: Michael Pritchard's Water Filter Turns Filthy Water Drinkable. There is a resource on TED already.

Why not have a TED Conference actually in a depressed area? That could definitely meld passion and ingenuity in a fascinating way.

I would go farther and suggest areas where natural disasters have happened in the last ten years. I believe people forget an area after the initial shock has worn off. Look at New Orleans, Haiti and Indonesia for example.

Apr 24 2012: I think that would be an outstanding idea. Ignorance plays a big part in poverty and TED talks will bring inovation and enlightenment to areas that need it . Perhaps community axcess to the internet (Specificaly TED talks). especially to the school systems. Jesus said that there will always be poor but I agree with you that if we could bring education to the poor the quality of life will improve.

Mar 27 2012: David: Japan, China, and Philippines will be a good start on actual areas, specifically countries, that were affected by natural disasters.

I must say, seeing that Aries is also from Philippines made me more motivated to set a TED conference in our local country.
